Under normal circumstances I would agree with you KIFARU BUT.... Honestly.... this person really ISN'T bound by the norm... he really has a way of skirting ALL issues... no matter how bad. AND I have to say that ANY manager put into there will be bullied to the hilt.... Im not an expert as you are in zoological things but.. heck I know about D G.

I can tell from your comments that you know nothing about David Armitage, I can assure you that he is a person that will not be bullied by Gill, in fact he is more than likely to tell Gill more than a few home ,truths that the great YORIK will not want to hear!

i noticed reading the report that gill was only there for part of the inspection, assume he did his usual when not getting his own way and stormed off
agree that the statements coming out of the zoo all have gills hallmark on them
dont know anything about david armitage but i fear gill will ware him down if not once the licence is renewed, and it will be.then gill will take control again

YESSSS Zoogiraffe :-) how right you are and how glad I am to see what you wrote.... From what I gather David Armitage wont be bullied... BUT I hope to heck he is careful because this isn't the usual situation.. I wish him such luck but I am worried for him... We will of course see but heck. PLEASE be careful Dave... (Armitage) that is :-)

I just find it amazing that all the David Gill cheerleaders that we have on this site, have suddenly gone very quiet now, that the true facts of just how great this place isn't have come out!!!

ZG, I suppose that now that everyone of them have finally read what the zoo inspection team has put down to paper on SLWAP/Safari Zoo management and husbandry standards and state of exhibits that further resistance is futile! :D

I can think of a few more one-liners, but will save those for when the SLWAP licence expires .... :roll eyes:

I've only ever noticed one person in that category on here....

Actually, from this Inspection Report and although it lists a number of serious shortcomings, there doesn't seem anything of the things listed that couldn't be addressed before their existing License runs out. Maybe the repairs to the walkways represent the biggest undertaking? The bigger issue might then be who they would be prepared to issue a fresh licence too. They must surely prefer for the Zoo to continue for all the benefits it brings to the area.

Found the report interesting to read. We visited last weekend and the zoo was busy. They seemed to be cracking on with the walkways.

There were many recommendations that I thought were spot on. The baboons indoor enclosure has troubled me for years - but why have they been able to get away with that for so long?

As for not renewing the zoo licence The local economy would loose a lot. There is not a lot going on in barrow other than the bae shipyard. The zoo does employ a lot of local people and they must contribute via taxes a lot to the area. I imagine the council would rather the zoo stayed open, but the list seems long and certainly animals are suffering in the meantime. This is the last 'free' weekend so will be interesting to see what ill happen next.

Sorry I cant do the Quote thing yet but..... Pertinax mentions " They must surely prefer for the Zoo to continue for all the benefits it brings to the area." To be honest there is a direct drive onto and off the zoo now, and apart from the wages paid to staff, there is NO substantial spin off from the Park... AND ... NONE at all that warrants the killings that go on there, One instance was the full flock of Ibis that were killed because of them getting out, when all that had to be done was to clip the flight feathers. The staff (allegedly) have been warned off saying anything in connection with the park. ... repairing everything mentioned in the report WONT stop the really bad issue going on... There used to be a full aviary of african greys there... they've gone now, no idea where, also the free flying macaws where did they go? just wondering but.... I'm not too sure if the report demands future explanations / catalogues of ALL animals going missing under whatever circumstances..

If they don't have full and accurate records, its hard to prove/account for what's gone where, what's died etc. For example, apart from the bird species you mention, they also had a sizeable Mandrill group at one stage- the last four or so were sent somewhere in Europe, but the fate of the others remains a mystery.

Isnt there some governing body in the UK that can ask questions about all the missing animals and make it compulsory to disclose where they have all gone?? Surely some of them have to be traceable on paper?

Despite all my grumblings about Dave Gill and the on-goings, being told to behave in case it caused offence or seen as liable. It is good to see, read and note how others are now seeing Dave Gill for what he is. The numerous reports of late has shown how far down the safari park has gone. We all agree that the issues stem from Dave Gill's involvement and his ego and attraction to control and power and, it is good to see that the council are finding some backbone to tackle these issues. We all agree that having DA on-board is seen as a good thing however, everyone should be careful that Dave Gill is not using him as a means to pass on the zoo licence and still remain in control in the background, likewise for his most loyal keeper who was a director and then resigned as such. The records, record keeping was noted within the report as being not accurate. It was also noted that the veterinary advice and action taken and given by Gill's wife is seen as haphazard and wrongful, not qualified and experienced to UK standards, along with over riding the local vet who has no control. There is no such thing as a 100% zoo inspection, you will find at least half a dozen points raised in any inspection, and as you walk around with the inspection team, you sit down and discuss, then the team go away and write it up. You are given a date set or time frame to work through and you make sure it is done. Having gone through fourteen inspections myself, it is nerve racking and you as a a senior member of staff are hoping that you and your team and zoo will pass. Dave Gill by crying out and making such fractious claims is only creating a bigger fall for himself and the staff. By accepting the faults and rectifying them, working to the set plan as recommended by the inspection team, the areas of issue can be easy to be resolved. There lies the issue, why is Gill behaving like he is? What does he have to gain by it? Is there an answer? And if so, what is it?

VERY VERY EASY..... because he can... and always has... and PLEASE.. if you know DA tell him to be carefull
