Barbary Macaques- mention of 'cliffs'and 'sheer rock faces' makes me think one of the old big cat enclosures has been converted for them. Is that right?
Nope, the former Steller's Sea Eagle enclosure actually!
I believe the plan is still to convert this area into a garden.
Thankyou for the photo...I believe its been mentioned before but it seems such a shame that a good site for an animal exhibit is going to be potentially lost. With all the enclosures joined into one, walls rebuilt and landscaping done etc, the possibilities would be plentiful.
I should have read this fully before commenting. So Emma's parents at Whipsnade must both have been Central African chimps also.
if you search through my old posts I think I gave a break down of which was which sub-species/hybrid
No mention of it being an extension to the current enclosure, rather a brand new exhibit in its self?
Looking at the last studbook both Cindy & Emma are PTTI think I found it. You do mention one female as being P.t.t. Someone else(ShonenJake13) mentions her name as being Cindy but it seems that's wrong and she is/was actually Emma who has now gone to the new 2nd group at La Palmyre.

Looking at that is just depressing.
I remember when there were Amur Leopards, Asiatic Gold Cats, Wolverines and Jaguars all in there.
I understand the enclosures weren't good and it was best to dismantle it but I always hoped it would be made into one large Jaguar enclosure. Still sad that Rica moved on...

The enclosures weren't actually bad at all - they looked a little small due to the foreshortening effect of the slope, but certainly gave plenty of space for the smaller species held within over the final decade or so of their existence (Tibetan Golden Cats, Wolverine, Binturong, Ratel). As such, if the big cats had been moved out and the carnivore row devoted to smaller species there would have been no issue.
