Barbary Macaques- mention of 'cliffs'and 'sheer rock faces' makes me think one of the old big cat enclosures has been converted for them. Is that right?

Nope, the former Steller's Sea Eagle enclosure actually!

As far as I know, in a semi-decrepit abandoned state, with only the effects of time having touched the area since the below photograph was taken in October 2015!

I believe the plan is still to convert this area into a garden.

Thankyou for the photo...:( I believe its been mentioned before but it seems such a shame that a good site for an animal exhibit is going to be potentially lost. With all the enclosures joined into one, walls rebuilt and landscaping done etc, the possibilities would be plentiful.

There are certainly plenty of possibilities that would be better than a garden!

Let's be honest - even left as they were, they would have been ideal for smaller carnivores or other unusual mammals!

I should have read this fully before commenting.:o So Emma's parents at Whipsnade must both have been Central African chimps also.

When they did the DNA testing following the more detailed sub-species break down, there was one Central Chimp, which by elimination of the others must have been Emma - if you search through my old posts I think I gave a break down of which was which sub-species/hybrid

I think I found it. You do mention one female as being P.t.t. Someone else(ShonenJake13) mentions her name as being Cindy but it seems that's wrong and she is/was actually Emma who has now gone to the new 2nd group at La Palmyre.

No mention of it being an extension to the current enclosure, rather a brand new exhibit in its self?

The plans certainly show it as an extension, with the 'old' enclosure linked in to the indoors area. Two big enclousres would be good for when/if the cats need to be separated.

Alternatively, they could develop the old Tiger enclosure for another species (Jaguar would be good!)

Looking at the last studbook both Cindy & Emma are PTT

I remember when there were Amur Leopards, Asiatic Gold Cats, Wolverines and Jaguars all in there.

I understand the enclosures weren't good and it was best to dismantle it but I always hoped it would be made into one large Jaguar enclosure. Still sad that Rica moved on...

well as I said a few years back, at least one high profile member (can't remember the name of the package but they are listed on the doors to the Zoo) had offered to completely pay for the redevelopment of the big cat enclosures at the zoo, and the zoo accepted the money - but then decided to use it to do stuff at HWP, rather than what it was given for.

The enclosures weren't actually bad at all - they looked a little small due to the foreshortening effect of the slope, but certainly gave plenty of space for the smaller species held within over the final decade or so of their existence (Tibetan Golden Cats, Wolverine, Binturong, Ratel). As such, if the big cats had been moved out and the carnivore row devoted to smaller species there would have been no issue.

Agree 100%, this is a total waste of an area that should be used for displaying smaller carnivores (of which the zoo has lost many since my first visit in 2009). Alternatively the whole area might have been knocked into one or two larger enclosures.
