ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2016

Something else quite interesting that I noticed on the 2016 animal inventory that I haven't seen being mentioned anywhere are two female narrow-striped mongooses (or boky-boky if you prefer). I'm guessing they aren't on show yet and could have been the two formerly at RSCC?

EDIT: To save trawling around trying to find the inventory, I'm going to attach it here.

Be exciting if these go on show! Wild speculation (!) but could this be why the gentle lemur's enclosure has been cleared and the lemurs moved?

A couple of observations about the inventory:
What has possessed somebody to use the common name 'Muji-kobanhaze' for Gobiodon unicolor? What will that mean to the average English-speaker? What's wrong with 'Plain Coral-goby'?

8 species of caecilian are held! Is there any zoo in the world that can match that? Of course, other than the aquatic types, nobody's ever going to see them, but still...
Interesting that one of the caecilians is listed as Idiocranium sp.
Currently, only 1 species seems to be recognised in that genus = I. russeli from Cameroon. I wonder if London's specimens are suspected of being a new taxon?

I doubt there's too much chance of another empty enclosure, Whipsnade held 11 cheetahs at 1/1/16 according to the 2016 inventory.

I only managed to see one this summer, and that was only its head.

A baby Sulawesi Macaque has been born.

"We're very excited to announce the birth of a critically-endangered Sulawesi crested macaque here at ZSL London Zoo! Born to 17-year-old Winoo, zookeepers are yet to determine the gender of the new baby who stands out from the adults, with its pale features and blue eyes."

Does anyone have any memory of Indian rhinos for a brief spell on the Cotton Terraces in the 90s? I'm almost certain I remember them there, presumably on holiday from Whipsnade, but I'd like to have it confirmed that I'm not going mad...

You're not going mad.

The female Indian rhinos "Beluki" and "Behan" were both held on the Cotton Terraces (in what is now the Okapi House) before being sent to Whipsnade.

Both of these rhinos arrived at London Zoo on 29th April 1997; "Beluki" was sent to Whipsnade on 22nd September 1998 while "Behan" stayed a little longer in London and was sent to Whipsnade on 3rd November 1998.

The three female lions (Ruby, Heidi and Indi) can now be seen exactly where they used to be above the moat, as some of the hoarding has been taken away for a clear view. When the male arrives from Winnipeg he will be in quarantine for 6 months in the other section opposite the back of BUGS, so he will be on show but not with the females.

I hope the narrow-striped mongoose go onshow where the gentle lemurs once were; only ever seen them once in Newquay!

Anyone know what species are used for parties/weddings? A friend of mine is having his reception there in October. I'm assuming standard issue llama, bird of prey, donkey...

I wouldn't describe it as a clear view but yes you can see the three lionesses at times but you could find they will be inside or lying in the corner out of site.

According to this

Losing a mane attraction: Winnipeg zoo's rare lions moving to England - Manitoba - CBC News

Bhanu will move to the London Zoo on Feb. 24

Bhanu will move to the London Zoo on Feb. 24

From that report he should already have arrived at ZSL if the move was on time, as its now 28th of the month.

Interesting too that his brother is bound for Chessington- the first I had heard of that.

From the British Monarchy website: "17th March 2016 The Queen accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, will open Land of the Lions at the Zoological Society of London, Regent's Park, London NW1."
