Memphis has a website up for Zambezi River Hippo Camp.

The new exhibit opens tomorrow. I hope to get up there sometime soon and get pictures of it, as well as the rest of the zoo.

Saw some video of it on the local news. It looks amazing! as a $24,000,000 exhibit should. Will go see it in a few weeks. I'll wait until the rush of school field trips are over.

I can sleep a lot easier knowing Memphis's hippos are living in a state-of-the-art exhibit rather than the ******** they have occupied for 60 years. Rare to see state-of-the-art exhibits open at two different zoos for two different marquee animals the same month (Detroit-penguins, Memphis-hippos.)

How many bonobos are there in the group here? I currently have six written down; males Mobali and Macumba, and females Gilda, Lisala, Lily and Kiri. Is this all of them?

Lily gave birth to a boy on 4/28/2014. His name is Mpingo, Father was the late Mofana.

Zimm, the Sulawesi macaque that escaped last year, has been put on exhibit in CHINA, along with five other macaques from the Buffalo Zoo.

The two white-cheeked gibbons and eight small-clawed otters that occupied this exhibit have been moved to the siamang exhibit in Primate Canyon, and the siamangs have been moved in with the orangutans.

I recently went and was very surprised to see cape vultures in the small african aviary in the new Zambezi Hippo Camp. It appears as if most of the birds in the aviary are not there yet, but there are quite a few cape vultures which I have never seen before. For some reason the nocturnal area was closed possibly for renovations.

According to the most recent issue of, "Exzooberance", a small magazine sent to members, the "Animals of the Night" exhibit or nocturnal house closed Jan. 1, for cleaning and upgrades. It is scheduled to re-open March 1. I thought the same about the aviary and some areas of the hippo camp in general. That they have place holders now and will add additional species later.
