Just a friendly reminder to everyone who's posted updates lately, make sure you check the link in the initial post to make sure all of your submissions follow the splits.

Additionally, remember that only Masai Giraffe counts for the US apart from the known pure Reticulated/Baringo at San Diego.

And again a return visit and now I got them all !

Finally been able to get back out and pick up some new species:
4) American Elk Cervus canadensis
5) Pronghorn Antilocapra americana
6) American Bison Bison bison
7) Southern Pudú Pudu puda

All from Queens Zoo.

Do to TLD pointing out the obvious with counting bison earlier, I'll be removing them from my list.

That said, a good few new species courtesy of Bronx:

After a visit to Natuurpark Lelystad I can add a further 3 species:
49 ) Eurasian elk ( Alces alces )
50 ) European wild boar ( Sus scrofa )
51 ) Wisent ( Bos bonasus )

Also discovered I had forgot just another species for Beekse Bergen - and also seen today at Natuurpark Lelystad :
52 ) Przewalski horse ( Equus przewalskii )

I have noticed that several people have listed collared peccary as I did, and they have been allowed.

I think the same rules need to be applied to everyone.

I would agree.

There are quite a few submissions throughout this thread that do not count under the rules this challenge is following. However, it's quite difficult to keep up with each one and call people out each time. That's why I made the post the other day to remind everyone of the rules, hoping they'd go back and make sure all of their submissions are applicable.

It would really be appreciated if everyone did so and made sure to follow the Groves splits in the future (I do understand that a few may be a bit gratuitous but to my understanding the majority are quite valid). Obviously this is just a fun activity to do as we visit collections throughout the year, but it's not exactly fair to those who do check if others do not.

Thanks in advance:)

The best way to keep track would be have everyone submit their full list. Any questionable species can be addressed at that time.

Barasingha, American Bison, springbok, wildebeest, Grant's gazelle, Thomson's gazelle, and red lechwe.

Considering most bison have cow blood in them (see my post when TLD brought it up to me) I don't think they can be reliably counted. Barasingha, springbok, wildebeest, and the two gazelles have all been split and, while you may very well have seen full split species, I don't know which ones they are and you'd have to look into it. As for the lechwe, to my knowledge, the US population is of an unknown (sub)species.

~Thylo:cool:

I'd go easy on the Bison one. Outside of Yellowstone, 100% pure bison don't exist.

All American wildebeest are Eastern White-Bearded.

Grant's and Thomson's are all pure lines (nominate).

No one knows what the US Red Lechwe actually are. It's entirely possible that they're Kafue. Whatever they are, they are a pure strain.

Barasingha ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Good point on the bison, though Bronx has at least one pure bison off-exhibit born via cloning with genes from Yellowstone animals and I believe (Oregon?)'s new herd coming in is of pure animals as they got some that the WCS wild-caught for transfer to another preserve.

Suppose the lechwe are countable then.

I think just that one's left. I know there are pure Southern Springbok around but believe there are also unknown ones.

~Thylo:cool:

Whoops, missed yet another split (I should really check more thoroughly...) but I'm pretty sure they were southern. Regardless, I saw southern (100% sure) later on at Fort Worth.

I can resubmit my list at the weekend when my exams are over but really busy right now. I think there are a couple of things I will have to remove, though I don't really stand much of a chance this year compared to last year since the main trip of the year is Australia.
