I know from visiting a lot over the last year or so that the introductions have been difficult. I've only seen 1 of the new females in the main area & that was last year. I believe they arrived July time so have been at Chester for almost a year. I guess there's been a lot going on to change the dynamic of the group over the last couple of years: a couple of the older females dieing as well as 4 females leaving & a couple of younger Males coming through the ranks can't have made the initial introductions easy. I'm curious as to how the 4 females are doing that have moved on from Chester but can't seem to find much info. I know kan Kan & Whitney went to Boras but I've no idea where Lizzie & Donna moved on to.

Lizzie and Donna went to Bremerhaven (where Twycross' Kibali was born)

This article shows how they are doing (btw its in German):

south east Asian passerines is the plan at the moment, so I think that means laughingtrushes, shamas and perhaps starlings. We will have to wait and see.

Why is the Tapir house themed but the Sun Bear house not?

If it wasn't for the viewing windows I would have said the house would be off show like the Tigers and Bantang and so wouldn't need it...I hope the planning drawing is wrong.

If I read the plans correctly the sun bear building will not be visible from the viewpoints for the two paddocks (and it will probably be screened by the planting too). I hope that the roof over the footpath will reduce reflections when viewing the indoor den of the bears, but it will also conceal the structure of the building. On the other hand the tapir house will be visible from the paths and from the river too.

What birds are planned in that new aviary?

I'm sure bongorob is basically correct, but the aviary and shelter are large enough to hold some larger birds too. I said in a previous post that I'd like to see the white-winged wood ducks and the great Argus there: the plans show a waterfall and a small stream, which doesn't seem suitable for the wood ducks - but I think the pheasants would look good and the male's calls would carry around the whole Islands complex.
The separate section of the shelter which can be viewed from the footpath intrigues me. Might it be for a breeding pair of small hornbills? They could be allowed into the aviary for most of the year, but confined to this section during the breeding season to prevent the male from raiding the nests of the other birds to provision the female and nestlings.

Ah, laughingtrushes seem to be good choice for walkthrough aviaries. Quite big, very active birds, moving in groups. Spotted laughingthrush would be perfect I guess, hardy, peaceful to small species during breeding and attractive to visitors.

Couple of chimp related questions:

Does anyone know Kiki and Vila's DOBs?

Also, are the chimps' names signed outside the exhibit, and if so are there pictures to accompany them? Only there are still a good five of the original 18 (not counting the new ladies) I can't quite identify yet; Wilson, Rosie, Sarah, Sally and Patti.

There are name signs but they significantly out of date - still mentioning individuals who have been gone for over 12 months now. I don't expect them to change until they have successfully got Kiki and Vila integrated with the others

A search on one of the German forums reveals that - Vila was born at Zurich on 27 Feb 1995 to a female called Xandra. Kiki was born at Krefeld on 28 March 1982 and went to Zurich before she, Vila and a number of others were relocated from Zurich to Gelsenkirchen in 2006

Kiki has had several offspring before

Although, Tropical Realm not withstanding, the curator of birds at Chester seems to prefer putting a lot of the zoo's laughing thrushes off-show, so I wouldn't get your hopes up.

If they have an imbalanced sex ratio in the collection for any of the species, they might put the unpaired birds in the walk-through.

After The New Sun Bear, Tapir and The Aviary Has Been Completed and Opened, What Do People Think the Next Biome or Area will Be?

Maybe a Desert/ Australian Biome With Camels, Kangaroos, Koalas, Tasmanian devil, Tree Kangaroos and More, with a Walkthrough With Lemurs

Or A African Biome with Gazelles, Hyenas, Warthogs, Colobus Monkeys, Hippos, Rhinos, Zebras, Giraffe, Lions and More With A Watering Hole

And Other Areas Like Polar, China and Britain THAT WOULD BE AMAZING

I doubt any big new developments will come so soon after islands. Any new biome-type areas will probably come from rearranging existing exhibits.

I'll be more interested to see what replaces the sunbears in the old tiger enclosure. I imagine that the tapirs won't be replaced more likely they'll be a shuffle round.

Don't forget that these three exhibits do not complete Islands. The Komodo House still has planning permission, although the design may be modified particularly if different species are preferred to the original plans for Komodo dragons, a small mammal and some smaller herps/inverts.
My personal preference would be to extend Islands with a New Guinea complex: the Papua section is limited to the cassowaries at the moment, which is frankly disappointing, particularly as Chester has kept many more species from that area in the past.

Suspect they will just knock it down and landscape the area, ready for the start of redevelopment of that whole area.
