Lucky you, I was wondering if you could find out what Chester are planning next year over than the opening of Islands phase 3 because it'll take a while for the annual report to show up so it'll be nice to know if you can't though fair enough I understand

Islands phase 3 hasn't started yet in fact not sure what phase 3 ,will be but phase 2 with the Sun Bears etc should be pretty good. As for future plans I think we will have to wait and see, but I suspect a lot of little projects will happen before phase 3 happens. But let's wait and see if phase 2 opens on time and in budget, and then we can start looking at what they will do next.

I thought phase two was the tigers and Orang's but oh well and I meant the zoo on a whole not Islands

They were phase two of the opening process, but part of phase one of the building process - all of which was meant to open together, but, er, didn't - hence the hasty creation of an 'opening phase two'. ;)

Hi Charlie,

If you haven't seen it already, you might find this article from the zoo's website useful. It covers most of the significant developments taking place at Chester over this winter and into 2017.

Well if you were told a species today was arriving next year, it will more than likely changed before the end of the year!

What is this long term plan Natural Vision? Oh please it sounded interesting but highly implausible

I think you have grasped the main idea.
Natural Vision was the long term plan which started with the rebuilding of the entrance block and then moved on to the Heart of Africa project and to the other areas of the zoo: it was then completely derailed by the recession. The basic concept was to develope different zones of the zoo for animal and plants from different ecological and geographical areas. That may still happen, in part, but it may take many years and all the details are subject to change. As I understand it, Islands was not really part of this original plan, but was brought forward as an affordable alternative when Heart of Africa became impossible. The moral of the story is that long term plans can look very impressive on paper, but they get changed and ignored almost as much as politicians' promises do.

That would, however, contradict the long-term collection plan we hear so much about. ;)
Very true but planned species can die out before they arrive, and new species become available. Sometimes even species that you think you will never see in this country!

If a spexies is announced as arriving soon, it does not mean that it will do so. Also species that are annpoinced as arriving in the near future, can sometimes turn up far quicker than expected i.e.warty pig and giant otter.

Yea gotcha lets hope that these species what ever they may be arrive soon though I'm dying with excitement knowing that Chester already has such an amazing diverse collection I really want to see how they expand on it what species that are fairly common they bring in what ones that few people in the UK other than us few animal buffs have ever heard of etc I really want to see something new and that I've never seen before cause I am really starting a lit of animals I have seen and I want it to really grow and Chester really helps with that

I had another visit to the zoo today, a couple of things noticed:

- Binturong are labelled on former tiger/sun bear enclosure, although if they are there were shut in.
- Reticulated Python exhibit is closed for refurbishment
- In the tropical realm, the former wrinkled hornbill enclosure now has Schalow's Turaco (Tauraco scahlowi) and Red-Tailed Laughing Thrush (Trochalopteron milnei)
-Both Hunting Dog and Chimp enclosures had signs saying animals where under veterinary
- Many of the bird sections (Owl, Flamingos, Penguins and Europe on Edge) have had new signage including an interactive one on flamingo courtship

Ohh very nice good to see they are introducing the two species early before they move to islands so they are more settled together cannot wait to see them though is their a specified number yet or no also it feels as if the hornbill aviaries will soon be replaced I've a gut feeling I remember them as a child and the birds are interesting to me so it's a shame to see some go
