The thing is, exhibits don't have to cost an arm and a leg. From what you've just said, Africa is for new species when the old species are kept in in what is considered by many below-standard enclosures [going purely by what others have said, I've never seen them so I'm relying on a common viewpoint amongst members whose opinion I respect, and who I know have a good working knowledge of the zoological world]
You can hardly use the argument that they have no space and no money when you've just said they are spending millions of dollars on creating a whole new area. Surely they should prioritise using the resources they have got into fixing the issues before adding new bits?
This exhibit will still look crap, still be rated as crap and still be crap when Africa is done [and if Africa is any good, then it will just make the weak points look ten times weaker].
Because that's all it is to you people. Making fun in trying to see me defend my hometown zoo. I realize people can be clueless. They sometimes criticize things they know nothing about. The Cincinnati Zoo is not San Diego, they don't have the space and a ton of money to create every perfect habitats.
Ever thought that some exhibits cannot be defended even by somebody that loves the place, and I'm afraid from what I have seen on this forum, this is one that cannot be defended, particulary given the fact that they have recently spent alot money re-doing this exhibit!
no it doesn't. Go to the USA forum section, look for a thread called "Moebelle's Cincinnati Zoo youtube videos" or something along those lines and you'll find a video of the entire inside of the nocturnal house. Some enclosures are alright, some are despicable. Unbelievably the house used to be the cat house where cats were cooped up in what amounted to fish bowls. They converted it to a nocturnal house and heralded it as a major improvement. The best you could say is that at least they don't have pumas and snow leopards in these boxes any more.

Sigh Here we go again. I'd like to start out by saying that this picture makes this enclosure look a lot worst then it is. As I've said before, many of the enclosures in here are alright and only a couple are bad. This particular one isn't too bad, there's a lot more room than you see here. I think many of you are way too hard on Night Hunters, especially considering many of you, if not all, have never been the zoo and most have never set foot in the U.S. I'm not saying this is a perfect exhibit and I'm not saying it doesn't deserve some criticism but it certainly doesn't deserve all this hate. I find it surprising that the elephant exhibit and cockatoo on a stick don't get as much criticism as this building. I mean, is it me, or does every new thing this zoo does get severely criticized? Africa! has gotten much criticism and, again, I didn't find it bad. The new Lion enclosure is certainly not as bad as many of you claim it is without ever having seen it in person.
indeed. Most of us criticise* zoos all the time. I love Wellington and Singapore Zoos but I still criticise the hell out of them when required. Just because a zoo is your local or favourite or whatever doesn't mean you should be blind to all its obvious faults, or even its minor imperfections.
