Do the zoo realise that producing a guidebook with 20 different covers would increase sales amongst zoo geeks with very little extra work!

They wouldn't sell me more than one, but i'm sure there really are some who are crazy or rich enough to waste around £80-100 for 20 identical books!

A female red-breasted goose and her two goslings are on show in the new bird rearing aviary.

The George Mottershead Memorial Garden is undergoing renovation.

An unlabelled cichlid species has replaced the Denison's Barbs in the aquarium.

At the Zoo AGM we were told that Sangay the male Spectacled Bear had to be put to sleep recently due to ongoing health issues including Arthritis. He was about 20 years old.

I thought someone else would have posted by now - so apologies for the delay in reporting.

That's very sad :( But I guess 20 is a pretty good age for a bear. Any idea if they're planning to get another male?

They haven't had an awful lot of success with these since they started with them. I think this is the third(?) they have lost, for various reasons. No blame attatched, just bad luck. Perseverence is needed and if they can obtain another male, hopefully they will be rewarded with breeding.

The FB page for the zoo has now posted a variety of photographs of the two tiger cubs, for those who are interested.

Couple of notes from today:

Maintenance is being carried out in the Okapi paddocks, so the three animals in the former camel exhibit are all indoors.

Meanwhile, there was no sign of Faida the giraffe and her sign has been removed in the giraffe house.

Just to be clear, this is the small, square area with the plaque and urn outside the entrance to Oakfield House, correct? If so, it's long overdue as it has been in a disgraceful state.

You are correct, and it was in a disgraceful state.

Has anyone seen the red-billed magpie chicks recently? I haven't seen them at all.

I counted four today - looking in very good nick.
