Congrats indeed :) hope mother and calf continue to do well

Great news! There are those of us who remember the nail-biting night when Zuri was born. Her birth was relayed online and caused a sleepless night for many when she didn't manage to stand for quite some time. I can even remember what the weather was like (awful!).

and another calf for the Black Rhino line that started with Bristol's 1950's pair 'Willie' & 'Stephanie'.

Thanks for the info Pertinax. (pity modern rhino names aren't as unforgettable ).

Yet another successful record for Chester’s breeding program of the species. I look forwards to seeing him/her soon. Well done all :)

It was chucking it down, this side of the Tamar as well. Looking forward to catching a glimpse of the new arrival in 12 days time.

The Mrs and I were in the rhino house at Paignton watching Sita at the time Zuri gave birth.

Looking forward to seeing all the new arrivals. Seems the past 12 months have had the most new arrivals in a few years. Sadly also a large number of passings and departures.

Unfortunately the latter category has now been added to, and this time - unlike with the jaguar and the komodo dragons - the animal concerned was young.....

It is with great sadness that we have to tell you of the death of our elephant calf Jamilah Hi Way.
Jamilah, who was born in January 2011, was taken ill yesterday morning and was being treated by the veterinary team.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of all involved in her care, Jamilah died during the night.
The cause of Jamilah's death will be determined at post-mortem. Jamilah, daughter of Thi Hi Way, was a much loved member of the herd and will be greatly missed by many.
It is expected that the elephant house will open a little later than usual today.
We are sure you will join us in extending our sympathies to the elephant team in particular.

One fears that it might be a return of the herpes virus...

Terrible news. If it is the virus again, didn't it hit the previous male calf 'Raman' at about this age? It is an insidious thing, seemingly striking at an age when the animal is already established and part grown, rather than newborn. Sympathies to all at Chester involved here.:(

What ever the cause, it is very sad news. Regardless of what caused her death. Can't really see a bright side to it. Hopefully though it is not the return of the herpes virus to the herd.

Indeed; Jamilah was 2 years and 5 months old, Raman was 2 years and 7 months old. Karha, another of Thi Hi Way's calves, died at about this age too - not sure they ever worked out why, but it is possible this too was due to EEHV.

We can only hope Nayan, who turns 3 years old in a fortnight, has passed the danger period.

What sad news, I was just laughing at Dave's remark about the canoes and I see this, poor little girl, only two years old, my sympathy to all at Chester, especially to her Mam Thi and the other elephants.

I think Karha was never a very healthy animal, having been handraised(?) and didn't she swallow a stone or something too? I don't know what was attributed as her COD. But 'Sittang' the male calf at Port Lympne that certainly did die of it, was in that same age bracket too.

Indeed; I think the key point is to restrain ourselves from speculation - no matter how tempting it is - until more solid information is known, and to focus on giving all our sympathies to the staff at Chester.

Lee lee & donaldson at Whipsnade who died within days of each other in 2009 were 2 & 3 respectively, but the older calf Euan(about 6 at the time) survived. This is tragic & potentially disastrous news, my sympathy to all connected with Chester.

Thoughts are with the elephant team at this time :(

...on a slightly happier note, the new Black Rhino calf has been confirmed as a male and will be on show for short periods from this week

I can't find a reference but I think Karha died from having being born with a digestive problem, she could digest milk, but not solid food.

She survived the operation to remove a stone from her stomach.

Such a shame - my first thought was the return of the dreaded herpes virus.

A female Lowland Anoa has moved to Shorelands Wildlife Gardens.

I'm assuming this is the Shorelands in Norfolk that has not opened to the public yet? They were due to open last year but had problems securing a Zoo Licence from what their page says. Also an Anoa is quite a departure from their current stock which is mostly birds as it's Ben Potterton's collection!

Indian rhino born to Asha on July 7th. Excellent news, a 4th rhino calf [the other 3 being black rhino] in the space of under 12 months and another first breeding for Chester.
