A Few General Questions?

Just a few questions I would be grateful for answers to if possible

Q1 – have there ever been any of the following Wolves in any UK collections Artic, Caspian Sea or Indian (Middle Eastern I think) if so where were they and how long did they keep them?

Q2 – Have there ever been any Grizzly Bear’s kept in any UK collections if so where and when?

Q3 – Has there ever been a Hume’s Owl in any collection in the UK?

Q4 - Would a new Bird Collection (say call it National Bird Collection) be worth opening or do you think that Bird collections in the UK are now passed it or is it better to combine them with other collections of animals?

Q5 – If a Collection was to bring in a very rare animal that has not been seen in the UK before would you be willing to travel to see it no matter what collection it was to be exhibited in?

I would travel to see a very rare species but especially a bird species no matter how far away from my home it was in the UK.

I would love there to be a collection of birds in the UK that was purely for birds and rare ones at that we do have collections based on birds but unfortunately they do not hold many very rare species I would love to see more collections in zoos have rare birds instead the run of the mill species that are popping up in many collections these days (not just birds on that one)

Flower (1929) records that London Zoo received a grizzly bear in 1832; this animal was presented by King William IV and prior to arriving at London Zoo it had lived in the Tower Menagerie for nearly twenty years. Doubtless quite a few grizzly bears have been kept in the UK but often they were just listed as brown bears and not identified to sub-specific level.

Similarly (Flower, 1929) records that London Zoo has an Indian wolf (pallipes) as long ago as 1848; fourteen were born in the zoo between 1852 and 1916. Zootierlist also lists an Indian wolf at Chester Zoo in 1939.

Yes, if a zoo in the UK were to exhibit a species (especially a mammal) that I’ve never seen before I would certainly be prepared to travel to see it.

It really would depend on the species for me, for example I would travel further for a Bornean clouded leopard, a Javan or Sumatran rhino or a zebra duiker than I would for any kind of rare pinniped or rodent.

Last year a small zoo in the Netherlands imported three brown monkeys with big noses.

This year I'm booked on a week's holiday to the Netherlands.

'Nuff said. :D

Must be terrible for you, considering it's full of apes... ;)

I'll manage - plenty of other primates (and other beasties) to help me through it! :D

I'm sure you'll be fine, be prepared for a barrage of questions from me, i'm anticipating the photo's already! :D

I would go anywhere in the UK to see a pangolin... I'd love to see one but there aren't any, are there? I gather they're very difficult to keep?? I know they're not "rare" as such, but rare in captivity.

None in the UK, no but nearest for us anyway is Germany, Leipzig. They have the Chinese Pangolin. Singapore have Sunda Pangolins, I believe that San Diego have a male Tree Pangolin (Going of ISIS!:o) pretty rare in captivity, on another thread it was reported Leipzig's mated.

You have a problem with our closest relatives then, Maguari? I always thought you were such a laidback chap!;)

I don't have a problem with them ( :D ), they just fail to interest me in the same way as other animals - chimps and gorillas in particular. Gibbons are fine - love a gibbon - but great apes just leave me a little cold, relatively speaking (not to say I have no interest, but a lot less than any other animal group).

Tai Pei (possibly spelt correctly) also have Chinese but San Diego no longer have the tree pangolin as far as I'm aware, it's apparently another ISIS ghost.

Interesting that somebody else [Apart from myself] fails to see the interest in Gorillas- Although when they call and a baby is playing, I do love that:p. Orang-utans and Gibbons don't seem to bother me, groups of Orang-utans at Chester and Blackpool do interest me quite a lot with Chester holding four animals at the least in both sub-species, pending what mood there in put on an interesting display. Gibbons are also another crowd pleaser in my view, there call goes right through you! Chimps and Gorillas don't seem to interest me that much, saying that I've not been to PL/Howletts.

I'll go now, Pertinax won't be pleased.:D

Yep, sorry- just looked an another thread, does look that way. Nagoya Higashiyama Zoo and Taipei (sp?) also hold Chinese Pangolins. Seems countries like Japan can hold this species with no problems. Saying that there near enough native to it.;)

Sounds like you listen to Radio 2 in the afternoons? that 'love a ... ' phrase is used on there in bizarre fashion quite a lot- I use it myself nowadays, e.g. 'love a Carolina Duck'.

It will be really tough for you I'm sure with all the Apes at Apenheul.:D Still, I expect you will do Burgers Zoo at Arnhem too and no doubt that's more to your taste!

Partial to 15min of Simon Mayo on the way home from work but otherwise not guilty! :D

Arnhem's definitely on the list (as well as Rotterdam, Beekse Bergen and a good many smaller places - plan is to also nip over the border to Osnabrueck to see the new Underground exhibit, with its Mechow's Mole Rats!).

It's odd; in my mind Apenheul isn't 'full of apes', it's 'full of monkeys'. :D

I do like a Naked Mole Rat...

I presume you haven't seen Proboscis Monkeys before then? I've only been to Apenheul once but enjoyed it a lot- the whole place that is, not just the Gorillas etc.

No, Proboscis Monkey will be a new one for me - can't wait!
