Followed by another 0.0.4 cubs to the zoos other female on 4th May
Both litters have the same father, Aakash who came from Singapore (unrelated to EEP stock with the exception of his brother at Rotterdam) so any cubs from this line are very much appreciated
Orangutan male Benjamin has been sent to Kaliningrad Zoo, in order hopefully to form a pair with a female there.

And today she has been found dead.
We regret to inform that polar bears-the female who recently came to aalborg zoo from rostock zoo is dead.
Noon today observed the curators of aalborg zoo a marked change in the 14-Year-old vilma. She seemed lethargic and had trouble moving. Zoo's vet was called and observed the polar bear, while there was ready to study.
Its condition deteriorated rapidly, and it died shortly after dinner. The Polar Bear will now be an autopsy, in an effort to find a cause of death.

More on the Rostock polar bear: An infection and inflamation of the intestines was the cause, and it is likely this started during transport to the zoo. It is very rare, but similar is known to occur in other species during transports.

Aalborg Zoo has gone down one ABC species: The two brown bears have been euthanized. Their exhibit was deemed outdated, and given that they were too old to breed, they couldn't be sent to other zoos
The zoo hasn't planned what to do with the big wooded area that contained the brown bear exhibits. Knowing the zoos track record from recent year, the enclosures will probably and unfortunately be demolished and replaced with a bunch of new Ice Age animatronics or a new playground, but time will tell.

Being a complete layman, I'm usually on the side of the zoos during euthanization decisions given how zoos probably know a great deal more about animal husbandry than I do (I wholeheartedly supported Copenhagen Zoo during the Marius incident). However, in this case, I'm also a bit puzzled. I've seen the exhibit tons of times in person. I agree with the zoo that's it's not the largest or most modern exhibit in the world, so it shouldn't be used for new breeding pairs. But it's not a terrible exhibit either - I've seen grottos that were 100 times worse. In my opinion, it was adequate for two older bears to spend their retirement years, so I have no idea why the zoo deemed it so terrible that living in it was supposed to be a fate worse than death. Again, I'm a layman, so I most certainly hope there are some nuances in this that I don't get.
How old were these 2 bears? I sense a row brewing here! Whipsnade recently added 3 young bears to their exhibit mixed with a 25plus year old female! Euthanasia of healthy animals is NOT acceptable and I was disgusted over the Copenhagen incident too for what it's worth

It comes down to cultural differences which can be seen in the differences between the countires' laws.
The german speaking countries put much more afford in searching a new home for the surplus animals. While denmark in comparison comes very quick to such a "solution".
One example is that there were a few institutions who said they would keep those animals and the copenhagen zoo refuswd the chance thinking those parks were not serious.
I don't know if it is true, but one of the keepers at hirtshals northsea aquarium said they had to kill the ocean sunfish otherqise they would have to cut him in pieces to get him out of the tank through the behind the scenes door, which would been useless for the public autopsy.
Cologne tried much harder to give a group of Blackbucks away. After some time no one wanted them they put them down.
While denmark is more often on time to create laws to keep up with the standards of the modern society, the appear a beat backminded when it comes to the relation to animals or any other living creatures.
