Aalborg Zoo Aalborg zoo news

Good grief! i had eight Chimpanzees listed at Aalborg, where did they all go? I assume the female that went to Burgers is Laura, and that Dorthe & Jutta had long since passed away. But that would still leave 1 female (Lone) and 4 males.
Aalborg Zoo only had two females left. Laura indeed moved to Burgers' Zoo and female My moved to Ostrava Zoo.

A few more things I found after searching Aalborg Zoo's facebook page:
- Female Jutta died in late 2021.
- Male Sabastian moved to Walter Zoo in Switzerland in early 2021.
- Females Maja and Lone moved to Ostrava Zoo in 2019.

African elephant Bibi has been put to sleep.

Does anyone know the zoos longterm plans for the elephants? Considering the tiny antiquated exhibit, and limited space to expansion.

As far as I know (from one of the keepers of the elephants) hey plan to phace out their elephants. They have two old girls left (I think they're both 42) who are too old to move so they will stick with those but won't be getting any new ones afterwards. As you said they don't have the space to expand and the enclosure is very outdated.

Aalborg Zoo's last two African elephants Tanja and Mai have both passed away. Tanja had been ill for a while and after the consultation of experts from both outside and within the country it seemed as she was not going to get better and she was euthanized. As Mai also also had some smaller health problems that made her unable to be moved to another zoo, the decision was also made to euthanize her. Elephants are social creatures, and they felt it wouldn't be fair to keep her alone.

A sad day for the zoo, they have had elephants since the 1950's and Tanja and Mai had lived there since 1985. As the enclosure is outdated they don't plan to have elephants again as they don't have the space for an expansion.

That is very sad news. I think it makes sense that they won’t continue with elephants. The enclosure wasn’t terrible for two older elephants but certainly wasn’t ideal.

I think they originally held 4 (1.3) adult African elephants (and 6 more Asiatic elephants on top)!
Their bull Hakon (Tembo) passed away in February 2008 (brain tumour) and the 3rd cow named Bibi died last year (estimated age 41).

Whereas I do have some reservations regarding the euthanasia of the 2nd cow Mai, just I do not know the local situation and/or conditions. She did also have prior health concerns.

This leaves the zoo a bigger open space across from the African Savannah and in front of their Asiatic lion and Sumatran tiger habitats......

Orangutan Ruti gave birth to a baby girl last Wednesday!

Some more information (copied from my post on the Orangutan Europe forum): Ruti didn't know how to breast feed the baby, she would give the baby her finger or her lips to suck on when she cried. The keepers attempted to show her how to breast feed by using orangutan plushies to demonstrate. They ended up finding a guest who had a baby who was willing to sit infront of the glass and breast feed her baby infront of Ruti. This seemed to work as Ruti finally started putting the baby in the right positions for it to feed. Since Friday the baby has been suckling and has gotten much stronger. Source

Does anyone know if the former elephant enclosure is currently being used for anything?

The zoo is also rebuilding its exhibit for red pandas, which will open this summer. The plan is to house muntjacs and red-crowned cranes as well as the red pandas. I am unsure however wether all these species will be housed together or separately.
