Hi there does any one know if the zoo is getting new primate species I was there at the weekend and was surprised to see 2 new female Drill in a seperate enclosure from the 2 males and female they already have and also the only downfall on Edinburgh zoo is that there is too many hoofstock animals and not enough of what visitors want to see the wow factor animals.

Good to hear the drills have arrived from Columbus.

What is this about not enough WOW factor animals, how about

The UK's only koala
The UK's only polar bear (for a few more months anyway)
Asian lion pride
Sumatran tiger
The largest chimpanzee exhibit in the UK
The largest group of gelada babbon in the UK
2 male Indian rhino
The UK's only lesser kudu, white lipped deer and Bawean deer.
African hunting dog, Temminck's golden cat, drill, aye-aye, purple faced langur, Visayan warty pig.
A pair of Steller's sea eagle
Australian cassowary
Europes largest penguin colony.

I think the WOW factor is definately there.

the animals

hi

as a regular visitor to the zoo there most weekends I do think that the zoo has wonderful animals my favourite being the Sumutran tigers but when you are there on a regular basis you hear people say what no reptile house no giraffes no elephants just over the past few years the zoo has been a holding pen for animals especially hoofstock before they head north to hwp i do believe there are great animals that lie in wait for the future collection and i do hear the zoo will concentrate on the smaller cats species some of which they have the margay golden cat etc.,

just to let people know the monkey house has had a reshuffle to accommodate 2 new female drills the aye aye has been moved into the Barbary macque house for the time being while the young owl faced monkey from 2005 is in the aye ayes enclosure he is due to leave the 15th of june. The magic forest is looking great with the recent makeover to the enclosures best i have seen it in ages.

It may be true that in the past few years the zoo has held species for the park, but that seems to be largely over now with the Amur leopard and the polar bear heading north.

Maybe it is now time to concentrate on the masterplan at the zoo and i agree with you on bringing back the giraffe, not too sure about the elephants though, and something has to be done about the reptile collection too.

animals

the zoo will find out soon about the landsale which is preventing the masterplan from going ahead I am with you about elephants being kept in zoos would love to see the return of crocodiles and more snakes out on display what have we got a few tortoises in the hippo house etc I do wonder what the plan is after mercedes leaves to her new home i am hearing that it may be redeveloped for golden leaf monkeys we ll have to wait and see.

I've never been to Edinburgh Zoo (hope to though when I get to visit the city one day), but it doesn't seem right to me to keep elephants in what is an urban zoo. I don't think Edinburgh Zoo is as hemmed in as say, Bristol or London (feel free to correct me on this!), but they still strike me as a species that would be better in a more rural zoo with more space to roam.

I can't see anthing wrong with a reptile house or giraffes though :)

One thing that was pointed out to me on this forum regarding edinburgh and giraffes is that it would rely on finding a suitably flat area. Since most the paddocks are sloped it could be quite dangerous for giraffes. No doubt there's a suitable area somewhere in the zoo, but it could be awkward.

I agree with Kiang. Edinburgh has a lot of interesting species.

The scaling down of the reptile collection is something I hope can be reversed in the future.

I would vote it the best collection in Britain at the moment.

What lives nowadays in the previous Giraffe House and paddock? It was adequately sized for a small group and might possibly have room for extension, I can't remember.

The old giraffe paddock is now home to the 2 male indian rhino.

In my opinion there isn't really an option to extend the enclosure further and as was mentioned in a previous post a nice area of flat even landscape suitable for giraffes would be hard to find.

but it this way, as a national, world renownend zoo, it does a better job to what people who visit from say america who havent looked on there website expect. from london (what theyve had but no longer mostley) expect to see is elphants rhinos Bears (porlars partic) orangutangs koalas ect Edinburgh zoo has 3/5 london has 0/5 the masterplan could be brill.

Off topic. Noth of the zoo (above rhea paddock) there is large land, does the zoo own this, if so, they could build a london like tunnel running under the path

:eek:golden monkey, along with koala and perhaps giant panda, surely the top three crowd pullers, but will it happen i seriously doubt it.

I think the current polar bear enclosure would make an excellent all enclosed enclosure for the jaguar, and could be linked to the magic forest next to it.

What lives in the old White Rhino area which is where I believe the Indian rhinos were first housed?

I agree there isn't much flat area in the zoo for a Giraffe enclosure. How about along the Western(?) boundary wall where a long time ago I remember there were paddocks with Nilgai antelope etc?

The old white rhino paddock was redeveloped and is now home to the red river hog and eastern bongo.

This enclosure was fairly flat and spacious when the white rhino lived in it and would probably have been able to house giraffe.im not sure if there is enough room along the western wall though.

I agree with you 100% Kiang, anyone who visits Edinburgh zoo and comes away feeling that they haven't seen an exceptional collection of wildlife must be very hard to please.
