The Edinburgh zoo blog, reports the arrival of the 2 female drill, but rather interestingly says that they have come from a continental zoo, which to me means Europe not north America.

Hi i have to agree with Kiang that the polar bear enclosure would be great for the 2 jaguars i dont know if Kiang agrees here but what about where the Stellars sea eagles are already has a make shift waterfall which never seems to be working when im in at weekends.

I have to say i think the eagle aviary is fine as it is, and sits well in the proposed oceans/wetlands area proposed for the masterplan, the zoo blog has been saying that the pairing of the eagles is looking very promising so hopefully some chicks before not too long.

Does any one know what has happened to the european otters in the lower duck ponds was at the zoo today and the water in the pond had been drained and the sign was down, was also disappointed to hear that the new golden cat is only here to complete its quaratine before being moved to another collection that was from the mouth of staff but it could be wrong who knows!!!!

I agree! There can't be many other UK zoos which have had more UK firsts then Edinburgh!

That is what I ment.
Edinburgh was the first to breed king penguins, but it wasn’t the first to hold them.
London Zoo had a king penguin as long ago as 1865, forty-eight years before Edinburgh Zoo opened.

I see that Edinburgh's website now contains excellent detailed information, including the zoo(s) of origin, breeding history etc of all the larger and more important species held at both collections. A complete turnaround from a few years back when there were just a few lines about each species in general and nothing about their own individuals. Maybe they noted the comments about this trend in zoos' websites which have been voiced on here many times...
and decided it was time to reverse it. Whatever the reason, they are to be congratulated on what has now become a very informative, and newsworthy site- far more interesting to read and a big achievement.
There is no mention of any new Chimpanzees arriving though- or that this is imminent. Does anyone have any news on that?

The new website info on the animals in the collection was written by the keepers, hence the more detailed info!
As for the new chimps, no definate date has been set yet for their arrival but it probably wont be until around Feb 2010 to allow health checks etc to be carried out on the new individuals prior to transport to Edinburgh.

Edinburgh, really leads the way when it comes to the history of it animals, rather than the species itself, between the blog and the site itself, we are being spoiled.
Hopefully again, where Edinburgh leads others will follow
