Any idea how they would accomplish that given the lack of suitable individuals and the fact other zoos take precedent (even Tierpark Berlin with their redevelopment of the Pachyderm House).

On May 12th, the Borås Zoo announced Dudu’s bull calf had been named Kojo on Instagram, which appears to be their primary social media account. However, by May 29th, the name had been changed to Kudio, which appears to be his official name.
 
Howett's wild animal park just announced that their matriarchal herd will be leaving to head to Kenya in a processes known as rewilding ! The only elephant that wont be will be Coco. All though it is exciting to hear that the herd will be moving their home land this move could very well lead to the the death of the herd, as the herds matriarch Tammi is captive born and doesn't know that lay of the land, at least for elephants that were rescued from the wild as calves at least they know the lay of the land. And the calves are very vulnerable as they have never known drought or predator's and the greed of man they have only ever known kindness from us humans. And the herds youngest and even their Matriarch Tammi have known humans their entire lives and releasing them back into the wild would be very dangerous. Mammoth journey ahead as elephants leave Kent zoo for the Kenyan savannah

Well, that is quite a huge undertaking on all parties so I hope it all goes well for the elephants' well-being.

I am guessing they are keeping Coco in order to rebuild the herd?

Didn't Howletts transfer some gorillas to Africa and that did not end well? .

To be honest, I am not the biggest fan of this. I don't think it's very feasible. I agree with all of the cons listed by @Javier Iniguez. IF this herd is successfully reintroduced to the wild, it will be a lengthy process, and by that time how many of those males will still be intact with the matriarchal herd, and I think this will stunt some of those females reproductive timelines. I fully support reintroduction, I am just not sure if it is feasible in this case or if the population is even ready for this. I guess we'll see what happens.
 
Strange move to be honest. Not that I oppose rewilding animals where it makes sense, but Kenya is one of very few countries where the number of elephants is naturally growing. On top of this they have a pretty full center for orphaned elephants as despite of the growing numbers poaching is a topic. It would be okay if it was a country with an intact nature but with issues regarding their numbers of elephants, but that move makes no sense to me apart from a PR effect.
 
Similar reservations. The project design and rationale seem not very science driven, rather it is played out as an emotive PR marketing exercise. I am alll for scientifically well designed long term reintroduction projects, I seriously doubt this is the case here, in particular the phrase I would love all captive elephants to be re wilded..... Wait a minute release captive raised and older long term held elephants out of captivity into a fully wild state with functioning viable local elephant populations, local issues with continued poaching, competition for land with human populace, essentially restricted habitat availability for new elephants, not to mention.most protected areas are around human population centers and no way to expand, issues with farming, fencing and the fact natural reserves and protected areas are increasingly only protected insulated areas surrounded by areas intensively used and occupied by human populations.

I'm worried about that. If it succeeds, it will be a sensation, but ... It often happens that not all animals can move. Sometimes some do not survive. None of the elephants have experienced how to behave in the wild. They know people as a friends. In addition, the herd consists only of young inexperienced animals, everything will depend on Tammi. And if she fails, it will be a serious problem. I honestly think it should have been tried with only a few other elephants. For the first time, trying it on such a large herd seems risky to me.

@Javier Iniguez I am relieved to hear that the Howletts born Bull Janu who now resides at Noah's Ark Zoo Farm has been spared of being released to his likely death. Coco and Janu have luck on their side as they get to live to old age rather than be slaughtered like their mates who are not so fortunate.
 
Wouldn’t it be possible that the howlett elephants would be released to a park/private reserve versus the wild?

This project is seriously flawed and even release to a private reserve into the wild is ill advised given the long captive history of the Howletts elephant herd.

I think we are all in agreement about that. But what can we do? It’s a privately owned facility. It is their decision.

I just hope they are not bowing to the pressure to the AR people.
 
Well as stated by @DesertRhino150 the Kenyan government along with countless elephant research and conservationists have sated their concerns over the transferring of of the herd. Since they moving to Kenya by bet on those how stated their concerns would the Amboseli Trust for Elephants the longest recorded study of any animal, Save The Elephants Located in Samburu National Park, and Tsavo Trust with is located north of Amboseli National Park Elephants might not fly: confusion over Carrie Johnson charity’s rewilding plan
