Maybe not the right topic, but how about african elephants is europe?

Pregnancies
Zola at zoo zlin due june 2018

Does anyone know more pregnancies?
Maybe at howletts or Cabarceno?
 
I have created this thread to discuss African Elephants in Europe, I have created a list of the population. Sorry if i missed a few zoos/elephants please correct me. The elephants are listed under their zoo and the zoos are in alphabetical order.

Great list Jaxton ! Had just a quick look and discovered one small failure. Punda at Beekse Bergen got pregnant from her latest calf at Wuppertal ( father being Tusker ) but the calf ( Madiba ) was born at Beekse Bergen.

Oh my bad, I must not have remembered. I will fix that.

A couple of points:

I assume you mean Berlin Tierpark not Zoo.

What happened to Swana, Justa and Stavit, who are listed as mothers of calfs at Howletts?

I didn't realise the situation was as bad as this. Are Boras, Cabarceno, Howletts and Wuppertal really the only regularly breeding herds?

I also wonder, based on how many animals it has contributed to the European population, whether it might be worth adding Ramat Gan Zoo to this list, at least in an honorary capacity?

I do mean Berlin Tierpark, my bad. Justa died in 2010, and so did Swana and Stavit in 2013. I think the issue is there are so many bulls housed with post-reproductive females and reproductive females not housed with bulls. And Yossi at the Ramat Gan Zoo is the sire of a majority of these elephants.

I hope so, they have a few females who are viable.
 
17 year old cow Kwanza (Kibo x Dudu) at Sosto Zoo gave birth to a male calve on June 16th. The calf is sired by Jack. This is their second calf together, and both are males.
 
Zola, a 23 year old female at Zoo Zlin gave birth on July 1 shortly after midnight. The male calf was born dead. A devastating loss. Zola is doing okay.
 
A few updates:
- Two males from the Wuppertal Zoo, Uli and Moyo, are moved to the Magdeburg Zoo on June 25.
- 32 year old Bibi at Serengeti Park gave birth to her 5th calf, a stillborn male on July 7. The calf's father was Abu.
- 11 year old bull Kando from the Berlin Tierpark moved to the Magdeburg Zoo on July 12.
- 13 year old cow, Infinita, gave birth to a male calf on July 26 at the Cabarceno Zoo. The calf's father is Jumar.

It is astonishing to me that on a continent that has been 'struggling' with African Elephants there is a zoo which can seemingly churn them out like Wuppertal does. I really hope that the Wuppertal cows that were moved to Beekse Bergen are productive.

Is 0.1 Mwana still at Magdeburg? How will they handle her and their new bachelor group?

0.1 Mwana still resides at the Magdeburg Zoo however, to my knowledge, it's undetermined whether Mwana is separated from or lives with the bulls. With the passing of 0.1 Birma (Asian Elephant), I would presume that Mwana is able to interact with the bulls through barriers.

1.0 Tembo was transferred from Tierpark Berlin to the Dresden Zoo on November 13, 2018.

The transfer of 1.0 Tembo from Tierpark Berlin to the Dresden Zoo will enable the Dresden Zoo to participate in the reproduction of African elephants in Europe. In addition, it’ll enable 1.0 Tembo, a proven breeding bull, to breed with 0.1 Drumbo, a proven breeding cow, 0.1 Mogli and 0.1 Sawu, two genetically valuable cows.
