“Akron Zoo announces death of Amanda the Himalayan Tahr”

Last Wednesday, the Akron Zoo had announced the unfortunate passing of it’s 20-year-old female Himalayan tahr, Amanda. Amanda was the oldest individual of her kind on record in North America and the third oldest in the world, according to zoo officials. The zoo’s care team had noted that they recently noticed a decline in Amanda’s health. The team preformed a full exam, which indicated the advancement of several age-related conditions. As a result, the zoo made the difficult decision to euthanize her. Amanda was born on June 13th, 2001 at the Bronx Zoo. In 2005, she was later moved to the Akron Zoo where she had lived for the remainder of her life. Amanda was also the last remaining individual of her species at the Akron Zoo, following the passing of her female companion Ripley, who died earlier this summer at the age of 19, due to cancer. The zoo is now in the process of considering some potential options for the future of the tahr habitat, according to zoo officials.
