“Akron Zoo announces death of Amanda the Himalayan Tahr”
“Last Wednesday, the Akron Zoo had announced the unfortunate passing of it’s 20-year-old female Himalayan tahr, Amanda. Amanda was the oldest individual of her kind on record in North America and the third oldest in the world, according to zoo officials. The zoo’s care team had noted that they recently noticed a decline in Amanda’s health. The team preformed a full exam, which indicated the advancement of several age-related conditions. As a result, the zoo made the difficult decision to euthanize her. Amanda was born on June 13th, 2001 at the Bronx Zoo. In 2005, she was later moved to the Akron Zoo where she had lived for the remainder of her life. Amanda was also the last remaining individual of her species at the Akron Zoo, following the passing of her female companion Ripley, who died earlier this summer at the age of 19, due to cancer. The zoo is now in the process of considering some potential options for the future of the tahr habitat, according to zoo officials. ”

On August 28th, the zoo announced that their (0.1) Speke's gazelle, now named Sagal, has debuted in the public habitat for the first time on August 27th.

On September 12th, the zoo posted an update about their (1.0) Speke's gazelle named Gondar who broke his leg during spring 2021. He is recovering well, and is expected to make his full public debut over the course of the next couple of months.

On October 25th, the zoo announced it has acquired a (0.1) snowy owl named Cirrus from Messinger Woods Wildlife Care and Education Centre in Holland, New York. Cirrus is located in the snowy owl exhibit and was brought here for the snowy owls SSP.

On November 4th, the zoo announced they have administered the COVID-19 vaccine to their Sumatran tigers, African lions, snow leopards, jaguar, white-cheeked gibbons, golden lion tamarins, lemurs, straw-colored fruit bats, North American river otters, skunk, red wolves, coyotes, red pandas, Speke’s gazelles, goats, and alpacas.

On December 15th, the zoo announced that their (0.1) snow leopard named Shanti was humanely euthanized on December 14th due to chronic kidney and heart diseases which resulted in a sharp decline in health. She was ~13.5 years old at the time of passing.

On December 17th, the zoo announced that a (0.0.1) white-cheeked gibbon was born on December 9th. It is the first birth of the species for the zoo and will make its debut in the indoor gibbon exhibit on December 18th.
