Akron Zoo Akron Zoo News 2025

I think I can confirm that Speke's gazelle will not be the main mammal in the African Hoofstock and Bird Habitat. According to the zoo's website, the zoo only has Akron-born Sagal left. If you look at the new map, the hoofstock appears to be a duiker. It looks like a yellow-backed duiker in particular.
I'm not sure Sagal is at the zoo anymore, as I haven't seen her since my visit in July 2024. I'll be sure to ask a keeper if I don't see her next time

That is what the zoo’s website says. It has been updated. It has been updated in the last several months because they finally removed Gondar.

Went to the zoo today. The combination of schools being out for Good Friday and the absolutely beautiful day made sure the zoo was absolutely packed.

  • Tomato Frog in Komodo Kingdom is no longer signed and the exhibit has been emptied out.
  • Was told by an employee that the Speke's gazelle and crested guineafowl are being kept off-exhibit due to the white storks currently nesting.
  • Jasper was the Komodo dragon on exhibit.
  • It's currently unknown when Lulu the red panda is leaving the zoo.
  • I wish the zoo would do something about the parking lot flow. There wasn't a single spot open (had to park down by the tennis courts around the corner). Some signs indicating the way to go would work wonders as it felt like a free for all with everyone trying to jam themselves into any available inch.

Nice dinosaur roster they have. Of course, there are more famous dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops present, but also less famous ones, like Rugops.
I was able to see the animatronics on my last visit and it's a good thing Akron isn't charging for them because they're definitely impressive

From the zoo's Facebook- A new attendance record was reached at 7,336 people yesterday for mothers day

From today's visit -
  • Trumpeter swans are back in the Waterfowl habitat. The emperor geese from the mixed Asian exhibit are now in the old jaguar exhibit.
  • Barn owl exhibit is uncovered.
  • Crested guinea fowl are back on exhibit in Africa. Still no sign of the gazelle.
  • Tragopans are still in the Legends of the Wild seasonal exhibit. Surprised they haven't brought the macaws back out yet.
  • Snow owl exhibit is closed and a sign says the owls are adjusting to being a new family. I expect we'll see a hatching announced soon.
  • There's now a green bottle blue tarantula in the night building. Golden mantella frogs are no longer on exhibit.
  • Tai Lung the snow leopard and the mongoose lemurs were no shows.
  • Lulu the red panda is still at the zoo.
  • The rainforest exhibit in Komodo Kingdom seems to have been restocked, as there were more fish in there than I remember being before. The trees seem to have been trimmed too as the golden lion tamarins were more visible than they have been in the pass

Notes from todays short, very rainy, visit:

  • Hyacinth macaws are back in legends of the wild. Ladys amherst pheasant is still at garden place.
  • Red Wolves are off exhibit.
  • Birds seem to have been removed from the RainForest Exhibit in Komodo Kingdom. Only saw the fish, turtles, and tamarins today.
  • Snow leopard, red panda, and tufted deer were no shows. Mixed Asian exhibit was empty as a result.
  • Spekes gazelle signage has been removed in Africa. Wasn't able to find out if the gazelle died or was transferred out.

From Facebook - 0.1 red panda Sundara has arrived from Detriot. She has no tail due to an injury.

You'll be able to tell Sundara and Lulu apart as Sundara suffered an injury on her tail as a young cub, resulting in her tail needing to be amputated. She has adapted well, and she is able to climb and do other red panda things with no issue.
