Anglesey Bird world

Hi all,
I was just wondering if any of you have any information on this place. I was wondering if it was still open-there is a distinct lack of up to date information on the internet-they don't seem to have any sort of website.
I visited about 4 years ago and was not impressed- it had been badly affected by storm damage to be fair but was still pretty poor. There was a talking macaw then a line of 'new' aviaries home to budgies and lovebirds which were an ok size but had no perches or enrichment. There were lakes with 'waterfowl' (really domestic ones like on farms) which were pretty tatty. There was a 'bird of prey centre' -a few tatty owl aviaries and a peacock aviary-there was no signs of information. There was some more scruffy aviaries (for parrots if I remember right) then an indoor area with cockatiels and some ornamental teal. It was all very rundown and scruffy.

I would be interested if anyone had visited recently (or ever) and if you can provide me with any information about its current situation-this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Willtheman45;)

I visited the place about ten years ago and it doesn't sound like much has changed. I was very disapointed. Their flyer mentioned that they housed "over 300 species" whereas I don't think I counted more than 30 - and these were mostly of the garden aviary variety (Rosellas, Bourke's, POWs, Zebra Finches etc.) or domestic. I recall there being Meerkats too. The newest constructions then seemed to be the owl aviaries and the meerkat pen which were all very cheap affairs. There was a walk-through aviary - made from the skeleton of a polytunnel - which might have had peacocks in and some old garden-aviaries in what I think was an orchard.

The place seemed to have little raison d'etre than a hobby, gotten out-of-hand in a rather shabby fashion. There was little or no signage, rudimentary facilities and an air that no one really cared much about it.

If it has indeed closed, I can't imagine it would be missed by many.

Anyone else got an alternative experience of Anglesey Bird World?

That's pretty much how I remember it to be honest.
There weren't any meerkats as far as I recall. It really wouldn't surprise me if it was closed-we were the only people there and its poorly advertised-I'm just lloking for some sort of confirmation on whether its open or not

I visited once - quick check of the files reveals it was 27/05/2004. I would agree with Paradoxurus - it just looked like someone's back garden collection of parrots and owls thrown open to the public. Highlights species-wise were Jardine's Parrot and Hawk-headed Parrot. Apart from also not having seen Meerkats, my experience pretty much exactly matches that of yourself, Paradoxurus.

Whether it's still open, I'm afraid I know not. But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Anglesey Sea Zoo and/or Pili Palas over this place any day. Or indeed, the sea bird colony at South Stack (where you're likely to see far more birds than ABW anyway!).

You can find a view of the entrance on Google Street View by searching for Dwyran, Bird World Aviaries, if that helps. Includes 'for sale' sign.

Thanks for that panthera Puss
Surprised its still open-all internet data is 4 years out of date and when I went to Anglesey last year there was no advertisement for it so I presumed it had closed

I drove past it at the weekend and it looked closed down but I didnt have time to stop and look properly. the gate was closed and carpark overgrown and an auction sign on the house at the front although i dont know if that was part of bird world as i've never actually visited.
i haven't been down that road for a year but it never looked busy when i've passed before. most tourists using that road probably go straight to the beach.

Thanks for clearing that up TC. Sounds as if its closed down and been put up for sale but haven't bothered to take the sign according to Google streetview:p

Just to say, my family owned Bird World 12 years ago, in our time it was in great condition and everyone enjoyed their time with us. We rented it out to some people who now reside in Llandudno, who are owners of a farm park there. They ruined the place, let the place flood out, were VERY cruel to the animals and were just awful people in general. I truly am sorry for your bad experience there.

Anglesey Bird World Memorial

Anglesey Bird World has indeed closed after the death of many birds . It may be of some consolation that the site is now being restored with great respect to the many birds that died through neglect under its last owners. The bodies of birds found in shallow graves all over the site are being collected and buried in a mound dedicated to the ancient local Celtic Goddess, whose symbol was, suitably, a bird. There is a fund to build this memorial set up by the new guardians, who are The Anglesey Order of Druids . Their plans for the site will also make it a valuable sanctuary for wild birds.

hi, not sure how much you know about the new page in the story of bird world, poss more than me! as i say in the post below it is being cleared up and hopefully will have a good future. It must be upsetting to hear about how bad it got.
