Prague Zoo Praha Animal news from zoo Praha

Bikira had its last visible regular heat at the beginning of March. So there is some possibility she is pregnant, but there is no announcement from the zoo.

From that I would say its very likely.;) Sometimes an unbred female gets pregnant very quickly when put into a new situation.:)

Could someone please provide me with the names, years of birth and places of birth for the Sumatran Tigers at Zoo Praha? I am trying to put together a family tree for all the Sumatran Tiger kept in Europe in recent years (similar to what's been done for Asian Lions) but require information on the parents of cubs, Fabi and Falco born May 2007 and the additional female who was imported from France for Falco. Thanks in advance :)

There are now 1,2 Sumatran Tigers.

0,1 Madalen born 1996 (somewhere in Poland I think)
1,0 Falco born 26.5.2007 at Prague, Dustin x Madalen
0,1 Surami born 8.11.2005 at Doue la Fontaine

A few updates:

Offspring
- Sumatran tiger Surami gave birth to twins last weekend, the big cat house is currently closed for public
- a hippo (male) was born 3 weeks ago
- gorilla female Bikira is officialy pregnant, due date around New Year
- keepers have built nests for both flamingo flocks, Greater flamingos are incubating circa 24 dummy eggs (real eggs are in the incubator), Caribbeans and Chileans are also sitting on nests but I could´nt spot any egg yet.

Reintroductions
- the zoo organised a transport of 1,3 wild horses to Mongolia/Khomiin Tal, the transport took over 50 hours, the animals are ok, expenses (over 40000Euro) were covered by sponsors, donations, army, ministry and own zoo budget.
- a Bearded vulture chick was sent to Alps, this chicks originated from Ostrava, but has been foster-reared by the +40 years old Prague male
- the current offspring of European rollers (from several pairs) should be released in central Czechia, because the species died out in this country 20 years ago.

Orangutans Mawar and Gempa.

From the Jersey thread -orangutans Mawar and her son Gempa have now come to Prague.

Any news on when they will join 'Padang'? Is the older female still to leave?

From how I read the press release both Mawar and Upita(f) should stay and it seemed like they play to introduce Mawar both to Padang and Kama(m) eventually. Two females from Duisburg should join Jersey group (instead of Upita?).

I guess that means they don't want to break up well bonded pair of Padang and Upita and as that means a mate for Padang they may not only introduce Mawar to Padang but may try to revive retired Kama as he carries some unrepresented genes (he couldn't handle presence if Upita well lately, that pairing is out of question).

(that's based on no inside info, just from phrasing of that press release (in czech only here: http://www.zoopraha.cz/cs/o-zviratech/novinky/novi-ora) ; they didn't actually say what will happen with Upita but as they mentioned young Duisburg females for Jersey I guess they would mention that if she is not to stay in Prague at the moment; Mawar was mentioned as the mate for Padang as the new start of orang brreding in Prague though)

The young female at Duisburg (Jambi, born 2000 at Duisburg, Siam x Anette) died 2 months ago, her mother (Anette, born 1982 at Berlin TP, Moro x Beatle) will go to Jersey soon.

Bikira the gorilla has given birth to baby (probably male) today but she wasn't taking care of it (she was hand-reared) and the baby has been moved to an incubator.

Grappling and suckilng reflexes ok, body temperature low (they tried to prevent it by letting hot air into the enclosure but it seems it was too little), so that postpones any attempt to give the baby back to Bikira.

Birth and the reaction of the group.

As well as being handraised, Bikira hasn't seen mother-rearing in the Belfast group either, where no babies have been born in ten years (much of her formative time was spent there).

Is Bikira the lowest ranking female? That might be why she didn't return to it after the others showed interest, or maybe she just wasn't interested fullstop.

Well, of course, that's obvious explanation and certinly it's influnced the otcome so far. Another thing may be quite quick approach of other females, it looked quite like she was getting out of their way (nobody can tell that's just pure specualation; and yes, she is low ranked, quite on toeh outs, cautious in presence of others sometimes albeit it look like they have (")already(") accepted her).

The other thing is other females didn't try to help the baby, it was neglected, so questions arise whether it wasn't cause partially by some health problem obvious to gorillas. This theory has some legs as (NEW INFO:) the newbron was taken out of the zoo to special intensive care unit as he(?) shows problems with thermoregulation* and they assume he may be born prematurely. Any reunuion attempt wouldn't be done sooner than Thursday.

*the zoo vented a hot air (50 Celsius degrees) into the enclosure to prevent gettin him cold; could the thing it that wasn't enough even after it was taken into incubator be a sign that somehting is not right with the baby?!

It's hard to imagine the enclosure heating up enough that a neglected newborn wouldn't still lose a lot of body heat, particularly if he wasn't dried off and he probably is prem isn't he, from the estimates of date of delivery.

I really hope Kera, also from Stuttgart, at Bristol is picking up lots of mothering tips for when her time comes.

Example of another female certainly seemed to help Mayani- the young female at Dublin, who recently had her first baby and is raising it well. She has a very similar background (handraised) to Bristol's Kera. The only thing Kera may not get is an opportunity to handle/carry a younger baby. That tends to happen more when the females are related e.g. mother/daughter, or siblings and the younger ones are allowed to 'share' and play with the babies. I used to see Mjuku at Chessington (now at ZSL), aged about four, carrying her younger sibling around both underneath and on her back, and I knew she would be a good mother- which she was/is.

I agree, she moved away as soon as they approached and it may have had something to do with her overall response, who knows? I somehow doubt she will accept this baby if it survives, but maybe next time around she will be more settled in the group and do better. Unfortunately she will always be a bit of an outsider/lowest ranker, I guess, until/unless she has her own family?

From RSS Newsfeeds; They have tried to reintroduce the baby to Bikira but she wasn't interested on the two attempts. First they let her into a room with it but she only touched it casually and then moved away. Then they knocked her out and placed the baby on her breast. When she came around, she soon placed it away from her and proceeded to ignore it. So now it seems it will have to be handraised.
