This lookout near bisons is the newest addition (opened yesterday). It should attract visitors into this less popular zoo part (mainly hoof stock pens all around).

Jana,
Thanks for the lovely pix.
I really do love Prague Zoo it's one of my favourites in Europe that I've seen.
Always there seems to be something new or new buildings being planned.
I have to come back sometime to see what's new.
I really like the new seal pool, it's totally different now from the old one.
Is the Dall's sheep somewhere near to the wolves? I thin last time I was in the zoo (December 07) there was some work going on in this area, or maybe the wolves have moved or got an improvement to their home.

Did the hippo's get a new enclosure as I think I saw plans to give them a new home when I was there.

I really can't say which is my favourite area of the zoo as where ever I look there is something good.

Please carry on posting more pix......

The Dall´s sheep is near a restaurant by bisons and wisents. During your last visit, you´ve probably seen works on an enlargement of hyena´s enclosures (opposite the wolves).

A new enclosure for hippos is still just on paper, if everythink runs well, a construction could start next year.

------

Just one pic added: father and son together. The indoor cages for these leopards are very far from ideal, but I can spend hours watching the family life, especially the growing up of cubs. Fortunatelly, Luzon (the father from Howletts) is a perfect baby-sitter. :)

ok thanks Jana, if I remember the bison is right at the top end of the zoo, where it looks out down a bank to the river below.
That new leopard pix is lovely. Will there be plans to improve the indoor area for them?

I don´t think there are any serious plans to improve the indoor area for leopards. Because there are many other, more urgent cases that have to be solved first - especially a construction of new enclosures for elephants and hippos.

Gharials have had acces to outside part of exhibit. Ignoring it so far.

Fennec foxes will move to outside exhibit in next two weeks.

Cassowary chick is exploring outside exhibit.

Bighorn sheep should join wapiti deers soon.

www.Zootierliste.de lists Black-and-rufous Elephant Shrew at Prague Zoo (from a private breeder). If that's true:

When and which part of the zoo they will be on public display?

The former fennec fox exhibit inside the small mammal house (now called Afrika zblízka) is beeing redeveloped for that elephant shrew. I think it could take some weeks till it´s on display.

There is no black-and-rufous Elphant Shrew, it is going about another species, Checkered Elephant Shrew (R.cirnei). This male lives behind the scenes till the former fennec enclosure is rebuilding for theme, in the next future they will get a female.

you sure it's Cirnei, because i've never heared of them in private hands (allthough i don't know that much about private hands), but i do know the black-and-rufous are in private hands (imported from the USA, where they breed quite well afaik).

@Jwer: I have got this information direct from the mammal's curator Dr. Pavel Brandl.

I don't know where that man sources all of Prague's animals from (some sources might be a little more controversial then others), but fact is that he has build (and still is building) on one of the most impressive (small) mammal collections in Europe.

Considering small mammals are my favorites to watch, I'd say that man deserves a statue :)

@Jwer: I absolutely agree with you, I'm great fan of small mammals too, he is working as coordinator for the Tiger cat (by the way, he is trying to bring new blood from Guyana to Europe, but without success and it seems, this animal has not a future in Europe, due to the inbreeding) and he has brought some rare small mammals to Prague Zoo, as honey badger, cloud rats and Chinese ferret-badger. Cross the fingers for another interesting species.

Some small news:

- Fennec foxes have a new litter, at least 2 cubs.
- Seriemas are bringing up 1 chick.
- Two Chilean flamingo chicks´ve hatched, around 20 eggs are beeing incubated. Also Caribbean flamingos laid 2 eggs, a third pair is building a nest.
- Cape fur seal female MYSKA has died. She was ca 19 years old.
- Two Green tree monitors hatched, a 5th generation born in this zoo.

Small news:

Mammals born - a North African gundi, a Gabon talapoin, a southern three-banded armadillo, a Nile lechwe, a sitatunga, two Eld's Deer kids and a litter of three red-handed tamarins. The ratel born last year was sent to Haifa/Israel.

Birds hatched - red-cowled cardinals, a purple-naped lori, two barred quails, four yellow-billed storks and nine Chilean flamingos (some viable eggs still waiting in an incubator). There were some magpie goose chicks but I don´t know if they´ve survived.
