Animals absent from British Zoos

I am curious about which obvious animals are completely absent from all British Zoos. The most obvious I can think of is Ibex but also Moose and several African Savannah antelopes.

Manatee, Cetaceans, malayan tiger, numerous australian marsupials, walrus, genets/linsangs (though I think a wildlife place in scotland may have european genets), dingo (but we do have new guinea singing dogs now).

AFAIK (which isn't much!) we're missing some subspecies of some animals, such as tigers (I believe there are no Malayan or Indo-Chinese in the UK).

There's a lack of dolphins, manatees, dugongs, belugas etc (but I believe all four tend to be fairly uncommon (except possibly for dolphins?) in captivity everywhere). Walrus too, I think.

Tasmanian Devils are another animal we've not got, although like the above, they're uncommon outside of Australia.

Kiwi, perhaps?

I can't think of any others, but I don't get out to zoos much, so I wouldn't know more than what's been posted here on ZooChat :o

Quite a few antelope species are missing from the UK - Impala (surprising, as several European zoos hold them), Gerenuk, all forms of true hartebeest, Bushbuck, Slender-horned Gazelle, Speke's Gazelle, Royal Antelope, Suni, Klipspringer, Black Duiker (and most other duikers), and we no longer have any Four-horned Antelopes.

Moose (that is European elk) are present at Highland Wildlife Park and bred this year. There are also at least two private owners (in Scotland and Cheshire) who have them.

No pronghorns, rocky mountain goats, chamois, gharial, quetzal, Baird's tapir, douc langur, etc etc etc

I don't think we have any Rocky Mountain goats left either (but don't quote me on that).

Are there an dromedary camels? I can only ever recall seeing Bactrian on UK zoo programmes.

Sumatran rhinos.

I think we've no snub-nosed monkeys too?

Gharials? Not sure what the situation is like for crocodilians in the UK.

Impala has always been that elusive antelope for me that should be on show somewhere in the UK, as you say plenty in Europe.
I would have though an ideal candidate species for somewhere such as Kessingland or one of the safari parks.

Longleat have some Dromedary Camels... at least, they did when I was last there. Can't think of any other places I've visited that has them though...

Colchester does still have 2 Rocky Mountain Goats but they are off show, but they will be leaving when they find them a new home.

about the marine animals, there are none in the uk, and there are only dugons in the sydny aquarium, but some are on the cards

Sea otters. Have they ever been kept in the UK or have there been any rumours of zoos planning on keeping them?

I have heard they were intended to be part of Living Coasts (eventually replacing the fur seals).

i believe there are dugongs in a couple of other aquariums other than sydney - pretty sure there are some in jakarta.

oddly, from what i know, seaworld australia (which owns the aquarium and was the the dugongs former home) have never tried to breed the young pair.

I thought that the Sea world goald coast wanted to take the dugons out of the aquarium?

Really no ibexes in all British zoo? This is really suprising for me as it is common animal in zoological gardens and also native in Europe. No Scotland or Welsh zoo keep them?

If you are talking about such rare animals in zoos like dugongs, pronghorns or Sumatran rhinoceros, so 99% bat species are not keep in British zoo :D

Manatees!! I would love to see some in a UK zoo! The NWCP is supposed to be getting them in 2015, however all mention of them has been taken off their microsite recently.... not a good sign!!

The proposed Imuya project in Glasgow, has manatees as one of their proposed species.
