@Ituri: do you remember when the Phoenix Zoo had African elephants? I first visited there in 1992 and have what I think was a memory of an African elephant there - is that possible?

@Blackduiker: When did the LA Zoo have beavers? Were they in the former aquatic section where the LAIR is now?

Phoenix had two African elephants (along with a single Asian, the late, famous painting elephant, "Ruby"). The Africans were sent to Disney's Animal Kingdom around 1997 to make room for Ruby's upcoming delivery which sadly ended in tragedy.

@Blackduiker: When did the LA Zoo have beavers? Were they in the former aquatic section where the LAIR is now?

Sorry I never answered this one David, but yes, I believe they were in the aquatics section's old Chinese Alligator pool. But I'm sure our former Curator Michael can give us a more accurate answer though.

The beaver were in the aquatics section. There were 2 exhibits where the front of the LAIR is now. Beaver in the first pool. Magellelanic penguins were there but sent out in the early ninties. and North American river otters in the second. When the otters left, baby grey seals were exhibited there until they were old enough to go into the much larger pool next door. The last animals in the second pool were the old alligators which bred and the female guarded the nest and offspring hatched. The last two pools had a variety of species, the smaller one was mainly for white pelicans and other sea birds and river otters were there for several years. At one time it also held an adult snapping turtle and several red-eared sliders. The former sea lion pool originally had young elephant seals in it . At one time, capybara were in both end pools and a group were in with the sea lions.

I wish London had many species but of those which I think could be viable if not quite realistic, I would say Asian greater one horned rhino in the Casson with an extended enclosure where the lawns are and spectacled bears either in the woods by the canal or in an extended enclosure where the anteaters and parrot aviaries are now.

Find Chital, Follow Deer and Red Deer Here.

Fossil Rim in Texas have beautiful deer, including Whitetail. I too miss the deer in most zoos, but I believe most hoofstock do better on larger tracts of land found in the mega zoos. One of my favorite memories of Fossil Rim is watching a herd of wilderbeest (I'd say 20 plus animals) move together through a stand of trees.
The one animal I would enjoy seeing again in the US is the saiga. I saw them only once in the San Diego Zoo in 1988. I believe I read it on this site that there were no more saiga in any zoo, any where. I wonder why. They are so unique, not really pretty, with their big sad eyes and floppy snouts. I find them very cute. The species is also endangered, with a recent bad population drop in Russia.

I'd like Andean Bears to come back in one of the phases of South American Adventure at Beardsley Zoo, and hopefully they'll be in a nice exhibit, not the cage the bears were in for years.
