Animals you'll never see in a zoo

James' Flamingos have been kept at Slimbridge, and for all I know may still be there. They were also at Chester in the early 1970s. I'm sure there must still be some captive birds around in Europe.

You really don't like the german site do you hornbill?

Berlin Zoo still holds some James's Flamingo's but they are the only ones in germany/netherlands/belgium that do.

Have there ever been any northern Hairy nosed wombats in zoos?

Yes, but only one. In 1996 a male was brought to Western Plains (Dubbo) as the first part of an intended captive breeding program. It was doing well until it suddenly died, having suffered a twisted bowel. Because of this, Australian zoos have been part of a Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat breeding program for the past few years in order to gain experience with their husbandry before another attempt at the much, much rarer northern species. (Info on wombats from Taronga Zoo Friends, June 1999.)

antwerp zoo has exhibited the giant armadillo many years ago, james flamingo are kept and only bred at berlin zoo, British zoos to keep elephant seal were london zoo, edinburgh zoo, dudley zoo, cleethorpes zoo (now closed) and flamingo land.

1. There have been whales kept in captivity, f.e. Grey whales (JJ, anyone?) and a Mink whale in J. David Tayor also mentions narwhales in the UK in the 1960s, but i doubt that.

2.Short-beaked echidnas: Frankfurt

3. 0,0,1 Chinese Pangolin is coming to Leipzig Zoo from Taiwan; they already rebuilt the exhibit; the one in LA is dead

4. No Indris are kept in captivity at the moment

5. San Francisco now has a Sea Elephant young to foster

6. Giant armadillo has been kept at Duisburg & in Berlin, too

7. Marine iguanas have been kept at Frankfurt zoo

Animals not kept in zoos?-plenty;)
Just some:
-Mountain nyala (only once in the Berlin Zoo)
-Argali
-many of the duikers (Jentink, zebra...)
-Hunter's Hartebeest
-Cross River Gorilla
-Giant Forest Hog (the one in SD isn't one)
-Chiru
-many seal species, like Ladoga Seal, Hooded Seals (saw one of the last in a zoo in CDN)
-Kouprey
-Saola
-most of the cetacea
-pygmy hog
-Samoa flying fox and most other chiroptera
- Fiji Orange Dove
-Inaccessible Island Rail
-Red Colobus monkey
-Tarsiers
-quite a bunch of langurs

and many more
...

What is the hog at San Diego then?

Jentink's Duiker is kept at Gladys porter zoo, and Zeba duiker was kept at Cincinnatti.

Sorry, mentioned Jentink and Zebra duikers are no longer...neither is the Hunter's Hartebeest at Glady's Porter

The hog is most likely a hypermelanistic river hog.

BTW: Almost forgot: Night Safari had a tarsier...don't know whether it's still kept there.

I think Pygmy Hogs were kept and bred at Zurich Zoo in the 1970s. The group was quarantined for Jersey but by the time the importation was due only males were left and Jersey never received them.

Pygmy Hogs were exhibited at London Zoo at least between 1883-1904 and bred there.

@bongorob: Well, nowadays there is an in-situ pygmy hog project, supported by Jersey and the ZGAP and doing pretty fine. But at the moment, no zoo keeps this species-just like the Yellow pig or the Giant peccary...

Hi Sun!
Singapore Night Safari still has one Spectral tarsier (Tarsius spectrum) and there are also some of them (hiden backstage) in Schmutzer primate center.
And to answer Writhedhornbill question, I think the only javan warty pigs (Sus verrucosus) in captivity are in Surabaya Zoo. They have a breeding group there.

Sun I misunderstood your list, I thought it referred to species never kept in zoos. Sorry for the confusion.

@bongorob: No problem; actually quite a few of the animals I mentioned have been kept in zoos in the past, but couldn't establish themselves.

I can recall seeing a pair of mountain gorillas at the Polar Park Zoo in Edmonton, Canada. That zoo closed down in the late eighties, but specialized in ungulates and a wide variety of cat species.

Anway, the gorillas always appeared bitterly cold in the freezing winters, and seeing them trudge through the snow was both bizarre and sad.

Yup, the Night Safari still holds one male spectral tarsier.

I think Sun Wukong mentioned pangolin. Night Safari has one male Malayan Pangolin as well.

Indeed I did. So You also have one, but another species than Leipzig is going to receive. Highly interesting; what do You feed? Any gastrointestinal problems so far?

@snowleopard: You're sure they were Mountain gorillas and not Graueri?

I believe the diet was obtained directly from a zoo in Taiwan which has successfully raised Chinese pangolins before, and it seems to suit the Malayan as well. I can't remember the exact components, but i read in an article somewhere (can't find it anywhere now) that it included mealworms, eggs, dog biscuits and some other stuff blended together to form a mushy "soup".

In addition, live termites are collected from the Night Safari's surrounding forests to supplement their diet. But this only constitutes a small portion.
