ZOO Antwerpen Antwerp zoo

I seem to remember that the Humboldt's were due to be transferred out of Antwerpen Zoo (thus concentrating on Antarctic penguin spp.)?

Yes, the latest reports say indeed that the Humboldts would be transfared to the new exhibit in Planckendael.

A new penguin species would replace them in Antwerp, but just temporary because that exhibit is scheduled to go under the ground.

A new male Mishmi Takin has arrived from Bouillon, in the other direction Bouillon received a female from Antwerp. Antwerp has now 1.2 Mishmi Takin.

Hippopotamus 'Lambiki', born in 2010, has passed away. Antwerp holds now 1.2 hippos.

Last month there were several try-outs to get the Yellow Mongooses together with the African Lions. The Lions eaten already 1 or 2 of them.

Till April 2013 'Hippotopia' (the area for Pelicans, Malayan Tapirs, Hippos and Wetland birds) will be closed for renovation. The wooden path along the enclosures will be removed and re-installed, the Coypu-group will be moved to this area in a new exhibit, the viewing points by the Pelicans, Malayan Tapirs and Hippos will be renovated and optimized, two new seperated filters will be installed for the Hippos. Also the Hippohouse and the Wetland Aviary will be updated.

The attendances for 2012 have been published:
Antwerp: 838.000 (-17%)
Planckendael: 810.000 (+8%)
Subscriptions: 55.653 (+4%) (= 200.000 people)

This marks for the first time in history that Antwerp is not anymore the biggest of Belgium, but the number 2. Pairi Daiza is the current number 1 with 955.000 visitors in 2012.

For the first in Belgium, a Spectacled Bear was born on February 3, 2013. The parents are Gladstone and Zamora.

The 39 Humboldt Penguin of the Antwep Zoo, will move to Planckendael on March 8, 2013.

Where in Planckendael will they live? Has a new exhibit been built for them?

yes, they will be combined with the flamingoes, it is built next to the Australian part, but they won't be visible for the public very soon....

European black vulture news : recently the Zoo recieved a young female bred last year at Osnabrueck Zoo.
The pair already owned by the Zoo has produced an egg.

Antwerp Zoo has a fine pair of Southern three-banded armadillos. The female - Isabella - came from Zoo Heidelberg in Germany where she already gave birth to 7 young but only 2 of them stayed alive.
On February 27 2013 Isabella produced her first young at Antwerp ( a first birth with this species at Antwerp ) but again things went wrong and the baby only lived untill March 3.
Hopefully the pair - the male being Pedro - will breed again and be more succesfull !

The Bird House is reopened yesterday. The bird collection has remained the same, but the decoration is different.

I found this film on YouYube. It seems to be a vets' visit to the zoo.

On April 10 a Great Blue Turaco should have been hatched at Antwerpen Zoo !
Unfortunately, the chick didn't make it. It was confirmed on the Facebook-page of the ZOO.

Other news: the Queen Elizabeth Hall (also part of the RSZA, like the Antwerp ZOO and Planckendael) will be demolished, starting from next week, and rebuilt in a modern version by 2016 again.

Does anyone have any information regarding Budi's move to America? I know it may have been delayed due to the TB scare in Emmen, but I suppose he could be transferred before the two from Emmen.
