Antwerp Zoo's Baby Aardvark Gets A Little TLC

1

Last week, Antwerp Zoo in Belgium welcomed a pink, wrinkly and bald bundle of joy. Born to mom Curly, the baby Aardvark is recieving around the clock care from keepers. Though its upright ears and weight are a sign of good health, nursing has been a challenge for Curly. The cub feeds every three hours, and the keepers must often hand-nurse. Currently the sex of the cub is unknown. Once the sex has been determined, a name will be selected.

There are currently 45 Aardvarks in zoos throughout Europe and only about 30 in the US. Aadrvarks are native to sub-Saharan African, where they eat ants, termites, fruits and other insects. The name Aardvark comes from the Afrikaans word "erdvark", meaning "earth pig", likely due to the animals ability to dig and burrow.

I'm going to be in Antwerp on Friday and will have some - but not much - time to spend at the zoo. As I will have to rush somewhat, is there anything I should be absolutely sure to see?

Monkey House, Ape House, Elephant/Giraffe House, Nocturama and Hippotopia would be the highlights for me.

I m not a big fan of Vriesland. It could be a bit bigger in my view. The Birdhouse and the pheasantery are very nice. One tip: don't waste any time on the Kiwi. You will not see it :)

You can see them on a screen which record them in their inside enclosure and if you are very lucky ( as I was ! ) a keeper will take them out of one of their hiddingboxes and hand it over to you...
( this happened to me when I got a behind-the-sceens tour about 20 years ago ! )

The screen is showing a video and not a live recording of the enclosure. And Vogelcommando I think you were very lucky :).

Probably the best place in Europe to see the kiwi is Vogelpark Avifauna in Alphen aan den Rijn. At least I did in April of this year :)

Phantastic-magnificant species.

I can't read dutch very good,so is it a male or a female, and is the Zoo doing attempts to get a Partner für him ?

It's a male, called 'Gijs'.

I don't know if Antwerp will or can get a partner for him. The only European holders are Rotterdam (breeding couple) and now Antwerp (1.0, the first young of the Rotterdam couple).

Thanks, Hippo. Hopefully they also can import some of them from the Usa like Rotterdam has done it a few years ago.

There are really private breeders ? I heáred about that several times, but I'm not sure if it's true.

So if some private people are breeding this species, why Blijdorp had to import them from the Usa ? But I think, the first animal came from a private Person, is that correct ?
