Any Seafood Connoisseurs Out There?

Who here loves seafood? If so what is your favorite kind?

Here is my seafood list ranked:
1. King Crab (red king crab is my favorite out of all the different king crabs...I wear a thick glove and use paper towels, when I’m handling king crab to avoid the spikes and spines. If you know how to protect yourself from the spiky and spiny shell, the meat is SO worth it)
2. Snow Crab (I prefer the larger Bairdi Crab, but Opilio Snow Crab is awesome in its own right, I will gladly destroy Opilio crab clusters anytime I can get it)
3. Dungeness Crab (it does taste similar to North American Atlantic (Maine) Lobster, but I prefer crab over lobster everyday, any day)
4. North American Atlantic Lobster (speaking of the devil, in my opinion, it’s not as tasty as crab, but it is heavenly!!)
5. Sea Scallops
6. Bay Scallops
7. Shrimp (I prefer jumbo shrimp, but I’ll take any size I can get)
8. Clams (I’ve only had littleneck clams)
9. Mussels (I’ve only had Prince Edward Island Mussels)
10. Salmon (my absolute favorite fish, it is so tasty)
11. Flounder
12. Codfish
13. Blue Crab (I much prefer Alaskan crab over Atlantic Blue Crab, but it’s decent, it’s just not nearly as tasty as its Alaskan counterparts though)
14. Tuna (I don’t mind the pungent odor that’s associated with tuna at all, its actually very tasty and can be used multiple different tests
15. Calamari (I do genuinely like it, but often times it’s overcooked and rubbery)
16. Catfish (I don’t like the texture of the meat).

Seafood I haven’t tried yet, but want to try
1. Florida Stone Crab
2. New England Rock Crab
3. South African/Australian Lobster Tails
4. Swordfish
5. Shark meat (I sincerely apologize to all the shark lovers on ZooChat...I love sharks, but I want to eat some one day)
6. Rainbow Trout
7. Crawfish (the meat does look good, but it comes in very small quantities)
8. Oysters

I also love seafood! My favorite seafood include Shrimp, Lobster, Crab, Octopus and Fish ( Corvina, Grouper, Red Porgy, Tuna etc).

*Corvina can be different species of fish but I don't know which one is the one I eat.

Got a favorite seafood restaurant? Red Lobster is my go to seafood place, but there’s a seafood restaurant where I go vacation in NJ, which is very good and fresh

No, I prefer to cook my seafood in home, using my own recipes and experimenting. For example, today I ate fried grouper. I made everything and experimented. It was delicious so I can say the experiment was a success.

How have you not had oysters?

I'm not really a seafood conisseur but heres my 'list' I guess, not counting stuff from the fish and chip shop.

In order of best to worst

1. Atlantic Salmon- by far my favorite fish and probably my favorite seafood overall, crispy, soft, not too bony, creamy what could a person want more?
2. Rock Lobster- Due to how expensive they are I have only had lobster a couple times but it is delicious with that texture
3- Southern Calamari- If it's cooked at it's best and is freshly caught it ranks up here but getting the right consistency is rare and normally it would rank much lower.
4- Elephant Fish (Australian Ghostshark)- Easily the best saltwater fish, is not bony, nice white flesh, soft and flavoursome
5- Moreton Bay Bug- If you combined a Prawn, Crab, Lobster and gave it the look of an isopod you get a moreton bay bug essentialy. They are quite nice.
6- Oysters- I like the texture especially with a dash of lemon, it's a nice but acquired taste
7- Crab- I have only had crab once, it's not easy to eat but it has a similar taste to lobster so it's ok in my book.
8- Southern Sand Flathead (Tails)- The tails of this fish are beautiful when cooked and crumbed well.
9- Scallop- Kind of like an earthy, tame oyster
10- King Prawns- Yumeee
11- Other prawns- still nice but not as nice
12- Rough Leatherjacket (a type of filefish)- Surprisingly nice but there is not much meat
13- Mussels- Budget oysters
14- Baby Octopus- I haven't had this in years!, my nonna (grandmother) used to marinate these.
15- Australian Salmon- One of the few Saltwater fish I can tolerate as it is not excessively bony, its not related to true salmon at all.
16- Clams (pipis)- Great with pasta but by themselves quite bland
17- 'Whitebait' (an assortment of small sprat like fish in Port Phillip Bay)- Good when overcooked as it makes it less bony
18- Yellowtail Scad- Has a strong lovely flavor and is not super bony but is prone to parasites
19- Blue Throated Wrasse- Is meant to be a 'rubbish fish' as it has mushy meat but I think it's better than most standard table fish in Port Phillip Bay.
20- Rainbow Trout- Poor mans salmon, it's okay but more likely to have parasites and made me vomit once.
21- King George Whiting- Okay meat, way too bony
22- Garfish- Not a fan
23- Flathead (body)- Bones, bones, bones, bones, bones
24- Australian Herring (Tommy Ruff)- Australian Salmon but without flavor, much smaller and is filled with bones.

I honestly just haven’t gotten around to trying oysters yet. I need to try them at some point. I completely forgot to mention that I have never tried rock lobster. I really want to at some point. Their tails are huge. I have tried Maine Lobster though and I love the taste and texture. How much different is rock lobster compared to Maine lobster?

I have no idea what a Maine lobster is as i live on the other side of the world in Australia. I'm guessing it's a lobster thats found in Maine.

How do you guys feel about crab legs? I definitely prefer king crab legs, but I will definitely never turn down a cluster of snow crab legs either. I have learned over the years how to get all the meat out of snow crab legs. It is a battle of will, and patience, and not giving up. If you commit to it, you will eventually get all the meat out.

I love Atlantic Blue crab. That's the crab I normally eat and it is tasty. It is also named Chesapeake Blue Crab, have you tried it?

I have tried it. I find it decent. I have had it in crab cakes and stuffed clams, and I’ve had a few whole crabs. My problem with it, is that it doesn’t yield as much meat compared to a Dungeness or a snow crab, or a king crab. I much prefer the Alaskan and North Pacific variety. I love king crabs, but snow crab is definitely a welcome alternative.

I would LOVE to get my hands on a WHOLE king crab, and eat the whole thing. Someone has to be selling those on the market somewhere. I also wish I could eat Bairdi snow crab more often. The Opilio snow crab is very tasty and delicious, and you can get nice chunks of meat out of it, but I want to have bairdi crab more often. It’s larger than the Opilio snow crab.

I would love to try all the crab types you are mentioning. Unfortunately, we don't have too much variety here.:(

No mention of Uni (sea urchin)? It’s one of the best sushi items there is. When I went to Red Lobster in Japan I ordered baked oysters covered in uni, which was one of the sweetest, most umami-rich dishes I’ve eaten.

I have also eaten sea pineapple, which is a Korean species of tunicate that I bought raw and sliced at a Korean supermarket. It’s got a bitter, metallic taste.

I don´t consider crabs, prawns and similar seafood to be edible, they are in the same category as cocroaches or earwigs, I refuse to ever touch them, dead or alive.

However I do eat fish. I like to visit ponds at late autumn when they are emptied and I buy fish alive. I very much like baked pike with potatoes or grilled with caraway.

I have never honestly tried either. I do like sushi though. Spicy tuna rolls are good as are California rolls.
