On December 29, last year, a white-faced saki was born in this enclosure. The family now exsists of a male, and one female with her adult daughter. The daughter got also a daughter last year, and her mother (also granmother) got the one in December. The gender of the newborn is not known yet, but male sakis will color from grey/brown into black very soon after birth, so it's easy to recognize.

Chickie, a golden headed lion tamarin, gave birth to a twin on December 27.

Also twins for the two pied bare-face tamarins. Very special because these monkeys never shows themselves to the public altough they are living for more then a year in Apenheul (together with the howling monkeys).

Java lutong female 'Pepper' returned from Athens to their family in Apenheul. She didn't fit into the Greece group. Her daughter nutmec however is happy there and will stay in Athens.

Also returning to Apenheul is the male verreaux's sifaka Minos. He felt lonely in Paris. In Apenheul he lived together with two bamboo lemurs and some vulturine guineafowls.
 
On April 1, Apenheul is open for public again.

We can see a lot of babies (like a red titi, a white-faced saki, a sifaka, and a gibbon) , and there are more to come. Each year many squirel monkeys are born, and this year gorilla Mintha is pregnant and so are three bonobos!

I can't wait to see them (perhaps next Sunday when I'm in the park for a special meeting).
 
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting Appenheul when I was there in 2003. It was a rainy day when we got there but it quickly turned into a beautiful day. I enjoyed watching the gorillas and the lemurs. Very nice place!

If you get the chance, you must visit this park again. It's improved with better enclosures.
 
Jup, that was another male. The only female born in the last years and surviving is a handraised female baby born in Mulhouse, either in late 2008 or early 2009. Pray that she pulls through and that next year will bring female offspring in Belfast and Apenheul, or the future for this species looks extremely bleak.
 
Good and bad news from the gorillas

Gorilla Mintha gave birth last night. But yesterday little Lembo'e (Sept 3, 2008) died.
 
Does anyone knows which new male orang arrived at Apenheul, originating from Spain? Who are his parents, who is he replacing?
 
Does the new Orangutan is "Boris" perhaps? from the old Valencia Zoo, now closed ...
 
When did he arrived? I only know three males: Karl (of Borneo / Frankfurt / Rotterdam), Amos (of Usti nad Lebem), and Willie, born in Apeldoorn.
 
Hmm... first this is not hot 'news'. The words "Why came a male orangutan from Barcelona" in the article are just hypothetical i.m.h.o, just to show the reader what kind of questions there are. Like: how many cost a gorilla, and what happens to the thirty squirrel monkeys which are born every year?

Karl lives in Apenheul since the opening of the orangutan exhibit in 1999, and he is the 'alpha male'. Amos is the intended successor of Karl. He came in 2008 to Apenheul. So I doubt if there was really a male from Barcelona, but of course I might be wrong...
 
I don't know. They recently updated their website but I did not read this particular page before...

But on April 11th they certainly had no new orangutans nor did they had plans to welcome one. Otherwise I had heard this because I spoke to the caregivers of the orangutans and to the head of the education department that day. If they had such news they would have told it...

I think this must be a quote that refers to a previous male 'Sibu' (originallly from Chester) who did go to Apenhuel from Barcelona Zoo several years ago . He was then returned to Chester last year as he was not a breeder with any of the females at Apenheul.

We believe Sibu has died at Chester recently.:(
 
Zamba has been chased away of the Island by the females in Apenheul (one of the male's from Planckendael), he went through 7 meters of water, and reached the visitors side.

The zoo was evacuated then, after 15 minutes was Zamba back on his place in his exhibit. After his escape, he showed no aggression to people.

Under normal circumstances it will do, this was an extraordinary situation. The mother of Zamba was to far away to help her son, which she normally does, and the females were more aggressive then normal because of their pregnancies. While Zamba was running to shelter he found the door to the inside enclosure closed, that's why he panicked and ran through the water.

The zoo is now investigating if something could be done to avoid another escape. In the meanwhile they keep Zamba separated from the pregnant females for some months.
 
After Bokito in Blijdorp everyone is focussed on that kind of news here.
But in the old days in also happend a few times. But it is still very rare.
Only there are now SMS or MMS reporters everywhere, and do we know almost everything now.

But i agree, it is not the best fence ever that water, but it is more than good enough according to my vieuw.
