Are These in Captivity? #2

Previously, short-beaked echidna were rare animals in my country(Thailand). Some pet owners had them but no zoos exhibited them. But now they can be bought from the pet market for 1500 US each. I don't know where they come from but I think they are imported from Indonesia. From a farm or caught in the wild, I have no information. In Thailand, there is a famous breeder who can breed them in 2022.

Are they sold with CITES papers? If price has fallen so much, I guess supply is steady and numberous...

Short-beaked echidna => CITES Appendix = Not listed.
I think the price drop is because some farm in Indonesia has been able to breed them, and they are nocturnal animals that like to hide, so they are not popular.

Sorry, I don't know many details regarding Echidnas.
I have heard that they were imported from breeders in Thailand, and were on sale at pet shops around 2012, with prices between USD 10,000-13,000.

Here are some reports from that time:

There are currently three facilities in Japan with echidnas (Ueno, Higashiyama, and Numazu Deepsea Aquarium) but I am not sure about their origins.

Animal hoarder/exhibitor Yoshinori Horii has one as well.

I saw two different accounts on twitter announcing the arrival of echidnas, each in a different occasion. One broker even has an individual that is more red than the others.

i knew there was something going on that most did not know about
well who knows maybe Echidna will be that thing People that drive a Rolls royce own instead of owning a dog, but at least for now they are protected in Australia which probably has the strongest population of short beaked echidnas! thank you Zoo chat community

Well, if we gave you all the answers straight away we'd be doing the project for you, no? ;)

Miami and African Safari Wildlife Park are the only two holders now according to Zootierliste:ZootierlisteHomepage
The story behind the Giant Eland population in the US is best found out by reading the thread. TLDR the ownership of the Giant Elands has led to this situation.

On Childonias species in australian zoo former species list
the White Tailed deer was mentioned at an Australian Zoo i can't find records outside of Zoo chat if so where are White tailed deer kept and whats the Australian story cause i know New Zealand has some

What currently is the status of Echidna in captivity outside AUS cause at one point echidnas were sold as pets mentioned on Some other zoo chat post is that still a thing ?
Two (1.1) adults and a puggle born last year at the São Paulo aquarium.

Thorny devils are difficult animals to keep alive in captivity. They require an ant food source. Replacements of this (which are used for species like horned lizards) or the actual few ant species we use in captivity have proven unsuccessful. The most recent attempt I know of was Zurich Zoo, which had two animals in cooperation with the local Zurich University and the Australian government.

Short-beaked echidnas are still being imported into the private trade. I know people who bought animals with documentation last year. If these animals are truly captive-bred remains dubious.
