Artis Royal Zoo Artis News 2022

Last month multiple birds have hatched among others Eurasian Spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia), Common hoopoes (Upupa epops), Northern shovelers (Spatula clypeata), Marbled teals (Marmaronetta angustirostris) and Black-crowned night herons (Nycticorax nycticorax nycticorax).
The common hoopoes have only been on show for around 2 months and according to ZTL this is also a zoo first breeding for Artis!

During a recent visit I noticed the following:

- I saw a female Wreathed hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus) the largest outside aviary of the tropical part of the bird house. This means that Artis has a pair of this species again!

- In the reptile house I saw 2 juvenile Philippine sailfin lizards (Hydrosaurus pustulatus) in GZ1 which previously held Fiji banded iguanas.

- I also heard that the Red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) in the Metzelaars greenhouse have chicks! Would this be a zoo first breeding for Artis?

Sad news from Artis, I just passed the margay enclosure and the last (female) Yucatan margay (Leopardus wiedii yucatanicus) has passed away. This was the last margay in Artis and also the last in the Netherlands.

Recently the pair of European Turtle doves (Streptopelia turtur turtur) moved from the bird house to the pheasantry, they can be found in the aviary with the Common hoopoes (Upupa epops).

Yesterday I noticed 2 Red-tailed amazons (Amazona brasiliensis) in the former Margay enclosure, I guess that they are the young from last year.

I also saw 1 Fiji banded iguana in GZ10 in the reptile house, I guess that this is the individual that used to live in GZ1.

Recently multiple Scarlet ibises (Eudocimus ruber) hatched.

During a recent visit I noticed that the Eurasian cranes (Grus grus grus) were moved from the Hollandse polder aviary to the former Malayan tapir enclosure, their wings have been clipped to prevent them from escaping.

I also saw 1 Brazilian tanager (Ramphocelus bresilia) together with Sun parakeets (Aratinga solstitialis) the pheasantry, the tanager was also signed here. I am not sure whether they are still kept in the Apenhuis/Forest house, but I haven't seen them there for a while now.

I forgot to mention that the Lowland anoas (Bubalus depressicornis) moved to their renovated enclosure at the start of this month. The enclosure has been devided into two equal parts, therefore the male and female can be outside at the same time. Yesterday I saw them together for the fist time!

Eventho the new design looked truely aesthetic, could not they have just placed thw oryx with the savanna animals? There would have been enough space for an exhibition as well. As in my opinion the exotic domestic breed yard was one of a kind directly oposite of the farmyard. An interesting exhibition about domestication could be placed in the new design, as the aesthetic still servered the orientalism of the previous inhabitants. Just a thought.

Does anybody know about the artis masterplan?
I mean I know the old one but is there an adapted version?
Will the nocturn

al house come back?

At this moment only 3 females can be seen in the enclosure, eventually a male will arrive to accompany them.

During my last visit, around 1 week ago, I saw multiple Eurasian quails (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) in the Fazanterie/Pheasantry. They are in the same aviary as the Common hoopoes (Upupa epops) and European Turtle doves (Streptopelia turtur turtur).

Had a quick visit yesterday and I noticed the following changes:

- The enclosure for the European Garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus) is almost finished but the animals are still behind the scenes.
- The former Gundi enclosure now houses a new species, Persian Jirds (Meriones persicus). However, I didn't see them..

A sign has appeared in the small mammal house on the old fennec fox exhibit stating that Artis will soon hold Dwarf mongoose (Helogale perluva) there. The landscaping of the exhibit has been redone with new plants and red sand. I didn’t check if they altered the outdoor exhibits in any way.
Artis has held this species before iirc.

Yesterday I visited Artis again and noticed the following changes:

Kleine zoogdierenhuis // Small mammalhouse:
- The European Garden dormice (Eliomys quercinus) are now in their enclosure, but spotting them is nearly impossible (I haven't seen them yet). They even had 6 young while they were behind the scenes! They share their enclosure with a few Eurasian quails (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) which can also still be found in the Fazanterie/Pheasantry.
- I finally saw the Persian Jirds (Meriones persicus)!
- As mentioned above, the former fennec fox enclosure has been refurbished to eventually house the dwarf mongoose.
- The former margay enclosure and current binturong enclosure have also been refurbished with new plants and substrate. The 2 Red-tailed amazons (Amazona brasiliensis) have returned to the pheasantry.

Vogelhuis & Apenhuis // Birdhouse & Foresthouse:
- The Hamerkops (Scopus umbretta) were building a nest near the exit in the desert area of the bird house.
- I saw 2 Red-legged seriemas (Cariama cristata) in the large outside aviary of the desert area, so I persume they were removed from the aviary at the foresthouse.
- Recently a Burrowing owl (Athene cunicularia) hatched in the Foreshouse.

Reptielenhuis // Reptilehouse
- The small round terrariums are still empty and have been replaced by cacti and other desert plants. Not sure whether this is temporary or if the whole structure will be turned into one terrarium.
