Artis Royal Zoo Artis Zoo News

For about 2 months 2 Fennec-foxes were born in the Small Mammal house. The whole time they were hidden in their birth-box but now they are leaving it and visable for the public.

For the first time in 10 years, 5 weeks ago a litter of African Wild dogs was born at Artis, Amsterdam ! The sexes are 3 males and 2 females.

The last owl faced monkey has left the Zoo. The female moved to try breeding once again, I do not know where she is now.

Beloved Egyptian Vulture "Duphralve" died earlier this day from liver failures. With his 55,5 years of life experience he was the oldest vulture in his studbook.

Visited Artis last week.....nice day...quite busy, even for a week day.

Lots had changed since my last visit, which was in 2000, so you'd expect that.

Not sure if this has been reported, but they now have 4 x springbok running with the giraffes (front side of house, next to elephants) - one of which is melanistic. Never seen this before in this species.

@ zoonewboy : black springboks are quite well known and also in zoos there have been several kept. At Rotterdam Zoo ( Blijdorp ) a black springbok was for example born in Feb. 1980. This young was however refused by it's mother and had to be hand-raised. I'll upload a newspaper photo from this young in the Rotterdam zoo Gallery.
Also in the Netherlands, the now closed Dierenpark Wassenaar had one or more of them and bred them if I remember right.
