Asian Elephants in Europe 2021

The Asian elephant EEP has decided to reduce the number of calves that are born each year because space of both males and new family groups is limited. So females are no longer allowed to have as many calves as possible, but rather only every 5-7 years.

I completely agree. His main mission was breeding with Faya. It's great that she's trying to have calf with Trong Nhi even if they want to move her elsewhere. After all, she had a single calf in 2013 and it is a long time.
Faya isn't going anywhere. Throng Nhi and her daughter Nhi Linh do. Fahim has bred with Faya and Throng Nhi, but it's not yet known if it was succesful.

What prevents exporting elephants from Europe to zoos in North America? From the news on this forum, many American zoos need to get new elephants.

Is it known where Trong Nhi and Nhi Linh will be moving? I heard they might come to the U.S., and I really hope they do, we could use a couple more breeding cows.

Ostrava - breeding ban for 7 years by EEP coordinator
Praha - breeding ban for current bull by EEP coordinator
It is sad. Especially also the fact that this year almost only bulls are being born. Especially that Ostrava can't have a calf is weird. Vishesh had her last calf in 2017 and should have another.

But I have a question. Why can Faya or Omysha have calves, but Rashmi can't? It cannot be a genetic representation, because Fahim comes from Zurich and has many relatives, Thai comes from Hamburg and also has many relatives. In addition, for example, Vishesh is a genetically very valuable cow.

I feel there may be some double standards between Western and Central European zoos when comes to elephants, and also some other EEPs of high-profile species, like gorillas. Some Western zoos with very cramped exhibits have breeding groups, and at the same time relatively larger zoos in Central Europe have breeding bans or are allowed to keep only bachelor groups.

What are the breeding restrictions for bull elephants?
Later starting to breed? Only to breed every five years?
Zoos with a breeding herd of cows should house as many adult bulls as are present to cows?

We very much do as we only have two cows that are pregnant Asha due in 2022 and Phoebe due this summer

The intention is indeed to move them to the U.S.
From my understanding their institution has been picked for awhile now. Only awaiting permits at this point. I’m sure we will find out in the very near future. Fingers crossed the us government hurry’s along before a EU zoo has an opening and they don’t get to travel over here.

I have a question regarding Asian Elephant subspecies in Europe. So I understand that Hannover has a herd of Bornean hybrids and some of them have been moved to Pairi Daiza as well as some other bachelor facilities. Are they barred from breeding? Is Europe phasing out Borneans? I also understand there is a herd of Sumatrans in Madrid who are actively breeding. Are they only allowed to breed within their subspecies? What about Sumatran hybrids, like Horas, Dimas, and Cinta? Are they barred from breeding? So overall, I guess my question is how is the EEP dealing with Asian Elephant subspecies?

1. Borneans and hybrids are barred from breeding
2. Europe is phasing out borneans
3. Sumatran Elephants are only allowed to breed within their subspecies because they have their own SSP
4. Sumatran hybrids are all on phase out and are barred from breeding
5. The EAZA has divided their elephant into three categories, the first is the Mainland SSP. This includes the Indian, Sri Lankan, and Malayan subspecies. The second is the Sumatran elephant SSP. Third is borneans and hybrids, which are barred and on phase out.
