Asian Elephants in Europe 2021

Anyone has any news about the reproduction at La Palmyre ? it's been 3 years since Gandhi arrived. The genetic heritage of the 3 females is really important for the breeding program but the stress is very present for Ziha and Alix because of the little enclosure,... For the keepers of La Palmyre the reason is principally the wait before meal but in reality it is an accumulation. And the separation of daughters/mothers is for me a less reproductive factor.

I don’t understand your post? Ziha and Alix are mother and daughter. And are not separated.

Oh yess sorry...

Today, there are 4 elephants in La Palmyre : Gandhi (M), Malicia, Alix and Ziha (F).
The females are always together and the male is going to his batiment for the midday.

In 2006 and in 2010, Homaline (daughter of Alix and Shinto) and Angele (daughter of Malicia and Shinto) were transferred to Pont Scorff and Budapest. And in my opinion, these transfers are a traumatism for Alix and Malicia.

I see. Homaline and Angele bred at their respective zoos so they must have adjusted.
I honestly always thought Ghandi was short (with a really big head) in the pics. So if he’s truly short maybe he couldn’t reach the females plus he has no experience. Does anyone know how tall he is?

I don't think that is a problem. His full brother Chang had the same physical (a really big head and short legs) and he bred for the first time at the same age as Ghandi is now.

Saida and Jenny know wach other from their time in Hagenbeck and hated each other. This transfer is a terrible idea!!!

Saida was transfered to Karlsruhe and zoo announced that Don Chung will move to Cottbus because she can't be with matriarch Kewa.
So Rani will stay with Kewa's matrilineal line, or would see head to either Munster to live with her full sister Ratna and breed with Nikolai or to Hamburg to reunite with the herd their

This is no good :(

Honestly Leipzigs elephant program has been such a mess for the past 10+ years. They've had more animals swapped in and out than I think any other facility besides Emmen (and that's just because Emmen produced so many calves that needed to be transferred out, the opposite of Leipzigs issue).

I hope this will be the end of it, and Leipzig will finally be happy with the Kewa family and Voi Nam. Call it a feeling, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rani eventually finds her way out of the facility as well. However I don't think Hamburg or Munster would be the best options. Both already have well established groups and Rani doesn't know any of them (I know she was born at Hamburg, but she was so young when she left).

I strongly wish Leipzig could have just stuck with the Rani+Don Chung pair, plus Saida. Saida obviously gets on well enough with bulls, so she could have been housed with Voi Nam at least part of the time to give her some direct social interaction. Or even better, have Salvana sent back to Leipzig to re join her mother as. No doubt it would be a very happy move for both cows, plus Leipzig would have two different breeding cows (still in two groups, but Leipzig has a number of yards).

Also unusual they wouldn't send Don Chung to be with Trinh and Hoa. She got on well with them and they were only moved apart less than two years ago. Would seem like the logical place to send her to, instead of a whole new facility with new animals, for a cow that seems to have a bit of a hard time with making new friends.

Saida has arrived. According to the German newspaper, saida and Jenny will be managed separately but will be able to be outside at the same time with the middle fencing/gate closed but not the elephants won’t be isolated.

Don Chung has been at Leipzig since 1984 I believe so the change to a new facility with unfamiliar cows would be hard on her.

So far I have read the following new guidelines in different forums:

1. young bulls are allowed to leave the birth zoo at the earliest at the age of 8
2. elephant cows are only allowed to breed aged 8 to 25
3. births per year is limited to 11 births.
4. Borneo elephants and hybrids are no longer supposed to breed in Europe.
Does any of this apply to African elephants as well?
