Well some actual constructive news to add the the thread again (also rip Birma). Interestingly, it also ties in to Mekong.

Pantha and Thuza (full sisters out of Ankhor and Kewa) are both confirmed pregnant at Leipzig, and due in late 2022/early 2023. Sire is Voi Nam (Mekong x Trinh).

It’s very late and I’m tired, so will post out my thoughts in more detail tomorrow after a good nights sleep, but overall, this is sure to usher in exciting times for Leipzig. Fingers crossed all goes well for both first time moms going forwards.

This is very good news. I hope that the calves will be healthy and Leipzig will finally have surviving elephant calves.

Is it in the plans to breed Kewa as well?
I hope the sisters will have successful pregnancies and healthy calves.

I just learnt some interesting news. A few years back, I mentioned on here that I strongly suspected Karishma at Whipsnade was pregnant via natural breeding with Emmett prior to his transfer to Blackpool. Turns out I was correct! Sadly however, it did not result in a viable calf. Her labour stalled, and she unfortunately ended up retaining the fetus.

Obviously Karishma is fine, but one can’t help but wonder how this bodes for her future reproductive potential. There is a chance she might reabsorb the calf or pass it (either on her own fruition, via chemical induction, or through conceiving and birthing another calf, much like what happened with Nina at Le Pal), but sadly there’s also a fairly large chance that her reproductive career is tragically now over. I would be very curious to find out what the end game is in that regard!

At minimum the zoo still has Geetha and Elizabeth to continue breeding from, but would be very nice to be able to retain Karishma as a breeder as well, considering her younger age.

Very interesting news, it's unfortunate the calf did not survive. I really hope this won't affect Karishma's future breeding potential since, like you said, it would be nice for Whipsnade to have a third breeding cow. Do you know when she was supposed to give birth and when all this occurred?

Don Chung is set to move from Leipzig to Cottbus to live with Sundali

"The Tierpark Cottbus is getting a new elephant!
Don Chung the elephant lady is coming to Cottbus! The Leipzig Zoo announced this in a press release. Don Chung had no connection with the other elephants in Leipzig...
Reason to be happy for Sundali as she has been living alone at the Cottbuser Zoo since the end of 2020.

We are also happy & already say: Welcome to Cottbus!"

Some sad news. Apparently, Motek at Ramat Gan passed away at the age of 62 on February 27th, 2022. He lived a pretty long life and sired many, many calves leaving him with descendants all over Europe and North America. 14 surviving calves, 24 surviving grandcalves, and 13 great-grandcalves.

His first great-great-grand calf will be born soon when Faya at Rotterdam gives birth sometime this year or next year. Perhaps Nhi Linh will also give birth sometime soon to great-great-grandkid number 2.

Such a shame to see a founder like Motek pass on, but he didn't leave empty handed. He is survived by his 14 surviving calves, 24 surviving grandcalves, and 13 great-grandcalves. With one great-great-grand calf on the wat to his great grand daughter Faya, perhaps another great grand calf on the way t his grand daughter Throng Nhi, and perhaps Nhi Linh will also give birth his 2nd great-great-grand calf.

This is very sad. He was an incredibly successful bull. He had a huge number of offsprings and lived to a truly blessed age. Along with it, a large piece of the history of elephant breeding in the zoo is leaving. Of the most successful couple of all time, only Warda remains, she is even two years older. RIP dear Motek and a lot of health and strength Warda. :(:(:(

Btv. It is quite interesting that the zoo did not report this sad news anywhere. Zoo is probably not that shared with the world. However, I assume this is true given his age.

Taru (born 31.12.13 at Hannover Zoo) arrived today from Szeged Zoo (Hungary) to Łódź Zoo (Poland).

I saw that on social media. He looks really good. Hopefully he and Alexander will get along well. I doubt Taru will ever breed as he is a hybrid.

Some more sad news, 33 year old Maejaruad at Koln was euthanized after sustaining a serious leg fracture in an altercation with old bull Bindu.

I have heard Bindu a selective bull with cows, and this sadly serves to nail that point home.

sad news indeed but honestly no surprise. By all reports it’s already a dysfunctional herd. They shouldn’t have brought in all of those older cows and just focus on the two from Emmen and the two younger girls that came after them.

ZCChip, that is not correct. You are right that in the years after the import of the 5 females from Thailand, there was a lot of fighting between the females. However, the herd had calmed down a lot in the last years after the death of Chumpol and the transfer of Aye Chan May and Kumari. The remaining females lived together very peacefully. This incident with Bindu is totally unrelated with those problems between the females in the past.

Thanks for the update. Thi and her daughter was also transferred.

Given Bindu’s age (54 years) and representation (five surviving calves), perhaps it’s time to retire him from breeding and bring in a new bull.

Koln already has two breeding bulls, in addition to Bindu they also have Sang Raja, who is in his mid 20’s.

Moreover, Bindu is definitely not a bull who you would want to retire yet. He has only the five living offspring, and one single grand offspring. In terms of the European population, he’s one of the least represented bulls there is, plus considering he is both on the older side, and selective with what cows he will mate with, it makes no sense to put him out to pasture yet. Realistically he will only sire a handful more of offspring over his life, and given the cows he would be producing them with, they will all be assets to the European population.

So what girls does he prefer? That may explain why he was not really successful in his previous location. I think it was port ly.. something. It’s been a while and I can’t roll it off my tongue!
