Well yes, with the inference being that they *will* be leaving the region in the near future, before having a chance to contribute to the population themselves.

Two excellent bits of news on the European front! Delhi and Gandhi will both no longer be alone, which is good, and as for Geetha (aka Donnas) calf, it has also been announced that it is a female, which is absolutely spectacular news!

Whipsnade:

The DOB of Donna’s calf was 22/08/2022:

0.1 Unnamed (22/08/2022) Ming Jung x Donna

Some further info; the calf was born at 6.45 am.

It's finally good to see Donna experiencing a successful birth. This is Kaylee's only grandchild (with Donna being her only surviving offspring); so it's great to have a female to contribute to the maternal line in the future.

Donna will likely be Kaylee’s only source of grandchildren given she’s 40 years old and last gave birth 13 years ago.

It’s great to see Whipsnade’s herd transform into a young, cohesive multigenerational herd - the latter two of which they were unable to achieve at the height of the EEHV crisis.

1.0 Ming Jung (2007)

0.1 Lucha (1982)
0.1 Kaylee (1982) - 0.1 Donna (2009) - 0.1 Unnamed (2022)
0.1 Karishma (1998) - 0.1 Elizabeth (2016)

At this rate Elizabeth would be next!

It's great to see Ming Jung finally succeeding! It took him a year to get at least one of the girls pregnant. Compare that to Luk Chai, at Melbourne, who impregnated all three reproductive cows within a few months of his arrival!

Elizabeth's a little too young to breed now imo. She's still six, and preferably they'd wait at least another two years before breeding her; by which time she'd be giving birth at ten (the same age Donna had her first calf).

A bit young yes, but if she was cycling when Ming Jung was with the cows he likely have gotten her too.
I am not familiar with the elephant management at whipsnade though. They may have the cow separated for mating when they detect she is cycling like in lion country in Canada or let the bull with all cows like Radza at Emmen.

I believe Whipsnade introduces their cows separately. There was a photo I saw back in 2020 of Karishma and Ming Jung together in his bull paddock.

thanks. It would be nice to allow younger cows to observe natural mating. Perhaps that’s why we have some behavioral non breeders.

@Jambo its an exiting prospect that there could be 2 Elephant Calfs at Whipsnade by Christmas. It would appear that the Herd have settled down since Mya’s left and all Elephants live together. I’m overjoyed that Karishma’s passed her retained fetus and can have another Calf. Elizabeth could have a Calf this year. Sithami at Chester Zoo was Elizabeth’s age when she had Sundara.
