Does anyone know about Bunka/Bun? It looks like he can be genetically valuable if the zoo is part of the EEP. His mother is still living with another bull (his sire passed) but apparently they have not reproduced a calf. Bunka is her only calf born in 2007.

Bunka is in Yerken and his mother is in Georgia.

His mother's currently in a non breeding situation at Georgia with another female; his father (Bacho) passed not long after Bunka's birth I believe.

His mother was wildborn in Laos, and his father supposedly was too.

Malka last conceived fifteen years ago too, so I think we can assume she's no longer reproductive.

So Bunka is a very valuable male to the breeding program. He's still youngish, but a transfer within the next few years would probably be advisable. He is Yerken's only elephant though, so he'd have to be swapped with another male (or two) that are well represented within the program.

The second elephant with Malka is actually a bull named Grant/Elbrus from Russia according to online databases. I had to look online because I knew nothing about this bull until I saw him on social media.

Actually, your right, i'd thought Grand was a female not a male! He was born in 1995 at Moscow Zoo to Pamir and Pipita. He and Pipita live at Moscow with Grand's two younger siblings.

He's been in Georgia for eight years now and hasn't managed to conceive with Malka yet. Hopefully there's still a chance but highly unlikely imo due to the gap Malka has since her last calf.

He has been given the name Maxi. Faya and Fahim's son is named after his grandfather Maximus. The little one is doing very well. After being indoors for a short period, he is now outside daily when the weather is nice.

A really touching memory to his grandfather.

Rather endearingly, this is the second calf born within the past few months who has been named in memory of a recently deceased grandsire, the other being African calf Kibo at Sosto.

That’s really great news - especially following the death of her only surviving calf last July. Hopefully a female to continue her matrilineal line, as Ruwani would have done had she not succumbed to EEHV.
 
Can anyone explain why Emmen/wild lands elephant exhibit flooring is not even? It seems to be layers and layers of rock layering.

I haven’t seen the indoor. I assume it’s all sand similar to the outside exhibit at the old Emmen zoo.

Both the elephants' indoor and outdoor enclosures are themed as a riverbed. The uneven sections are mainly on the edges of the water, and also act as a kind of staircase so the elephants can get in and out of the water. In the middle are also flat sections with sand.

thanks. That’s what I meant. are there too many “steps” than the flat area? What if an elephant needed to get away from someone more aggressive?
 
Asian elephant females Trong Nhi and Nhi linh will leave Diergaarde Blijdorp very soon and move to the Smithsonian Zoo in the US. They have been prepared for their impending move for quite some time. They will be accompanied throughout the journey and also the week after by two keepers from Blijdorp and a veterinarian. Keepers from the Smithsonian Zoo previously spent a week in Blijdorp to get to know the two elephants.

No chance for them coming pregnant I suppose. Timber has been gone since 2020. So Spike will have a job ahead of him.

does anyone remember who the girls headed to Cincinnati? The Dublin girls?

I agree with you that the design of this indoor area is very unforunate and potentially dangerous, especially for young calves. Steps and uneven ground is okay but not that much and not this close to the water moat.

and where can one elephant go if he or she is being bullied? Over the steps to the other side?

i don’t mind some steps but to me there needs to be more level ground.

The two elephant females left Diergaarde Blijdorp today. They will be transported to the US by plane.
