Asian Lions in Europe - Part Two

Couple of recent updates:

Transfers
Male, Jari was transferred from Paignton to Planckendael on 25th Feb. He replaces male, Dhari (Mulhouse2010) who died suddenly in 2013 and will be paired with the remaining sister from Planckendael's 2010 litter

Male, Sabal also left Paignton on 25th Feb. This time for Zoo Krakow who are a new holder. On the way his brother Jari was delivered to Planckendael and one of the females from there was collected for Krakow.

Leaving Planckendael with 1.2 and Krakow with 1.1

Following these transfers Paignton are now left with 0.3 (mother and daughters) female, Zarina is due to transfer to Frankfurt shortly which will leave Indu (Paignton2003 Midas X Jamna) and Maliya (Paignton2012)

At some stage they are expected to be joined by male, Lucifer from London to form what is likely to be a none breeding group

In other news: Female, Jasdon (Dudley2003 Max X Gir) at Terra Natura has recently undergone treatment to assist her in conceiving after male, Bala (Besancon2005 Dacca X Lady) was found to have issues...
Terra Natura Benidorm, Parque zoologico. Parque de animales, parque acuatico.

The female moving from Planckendael to Krakow was Lolana, who made the move to Poland on the 28th of February.

Meanwhile, 'Khana' (b. Parken 2011) has moved to Cotswold Wildlife Park, joining 2-year-old male 'Rana' to create a very well-named pairing.

sadly this new founder male didn't manage to breed during his two years in Europe
Do you know how many new founders arrived at that time, and where they are now?

Dvur imported 1.1. Unfortunately the female that came was already too old to breed (think she was at least 15 on arrival) and she died not long after the transfer took place. Bramha however was only 4 (6 when he died) so there was a chance of him breeding with the two females that Dvur had obtained from Helsinki prior to his arrival. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be so it seems....

The lioness Avaini is pretty much still alive, I´ve seen her last month. But yes, she is too old to breed. It is pitty Brahma died so soon, but since his arrival I had doubts those two Helsinki lionesses were fertile. If EEP woud had sent another young fertile lioness on time, Brahma might have bred, who knows.

Thanks for the correction :o glad to hear she is still going strong

You do wonder about studbook co-ordinators sometimes. How on earth did an animal that old get picked for the long, expensive and no doubt stressful journey from India to the Czech Republic, with about as much chance of her breeding at the end of the journey as there was of her growing a mane?

It wasn't an EEP/EAZA or studbook approved transfer. Despite several attempts by the then studbook keeper, all attempts to get new imports had failed until Dvur had a breakthrough by offering to swap Nehru Zoological Park in Hyderabad for two pairs of Cheetah... The offer was accepted and the swap took place in early 2012. Neither of the imported pair were made part of the studbook at the time anyway because Dvur being none members of EAZA

But why the elderly female was selected instead of a breedable female was never made public. The only theory to that we came up with at the time was that Dvur were so desperate to get him that they agreed to any reasonable conditions the Indian zoo made and that could have included taking her as part of the deal....

That is strange... If one/both of those Lions had bred and cubs later distributed to other Zoos, it would have made rather a mockery of the studbook if the Dvur animal(s) wasn't included.

A new arrival at Chessington - female, Rani (B13/11/2011 Shantee X Kumar) has arrived from Rotterdam recently

Male 'Shanto' (b. Rotterdam 2011, Kumar x Shantee) has moved to Santillana, replacing previous male 'Lord', who is presumed to have died. He joins elderly females Asha and Gita, formerly of Chester and Edinburgh, who are now both about sixteen years old.

Excellent news from Aalborg - a five-year-old male has been imported from Singapore!
