Assiniboine Park Zoo Assiniboine Park Zoo News 2017

An online poll received close to 4,000 votes for each bear over the weekend. Results were tallied on Monday afternoon with the clear winners being Nanuq, the Inuit word for polar bear, for the female and Siku, the Inuit word for ice, for the male.

Names for the female cub were submitted by children and staff at the Churchill Children’s Centre. Names for the male cub were submitted by APC staff. Both lists were then examined and narrowed down by representatives from the Zoo.

Nanuq must be the most common name for captive polar bears ever. Nevertheless I prefer Inuit names for arctic animals including of course polar bears and Siku is a great name.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of originality when it comes to naming polar bears. Nanuq and Siku are also the names of polar bears currently living in the US as well. Of other living polar bears in North American zoos, I believe there are three named Aurora, three named Anana, two named Hudson, and two named Nikita. There are probably other examples I'm missing.

Personally my favorites are Cranbeary and Coldilocks, both females living in the states. Now those are some snazzy names ;)

Close...

  • Aurora (Seneca Park Zoo - Rochester, NY)
  • Aurora (Columbus Zoo - Columbus, OH)
  • Anana (Cincinnati Zoo, Cincinnati, OH)
  • Anana (Columbus Zoo, Columbus, OH)
  • Anana (North Carolina Zoo, Asheboro, NC)
  • Hudson (Brookfield Zoo, Brookfield, IL)
  • Nikita (North Carolina Zoo, Asheboro, NC)
I know there are a few Nanuqs in the European population, but this is the first I heard of a female with that name!

There is a Hudson and a Nikita living in Canada; those were the ones I was referring to. There was a third Aurora in the recent past, but she's deceased now.

My mistake; I see now it says "North American zoos". But yes, all those names seem to be quite common these days.

Assiniboine also has an Aurora. In addition to the two newest cubs they have the following bears
Storm 1.0
Blizzard 1.0
Eli 1.0
York 1.0
Aurora 0.1
Kaska 0.1
Star 0.1

Polar bears York and Eli have made the move to Journey to Churchill to integrate with the big bears.

Polar bear cub, Juno, will be arriving shortly from Toronto to integrate with the zoo's other polar bear cubs.

Juno has arrived in Winnipeg.

"
The Assiniboine Park Zoo is pleased to report that Juno, the 15 month old polar bear from the Toronto Zoo has arrived in Winnipeg safely and has moved into her temporary home at the Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre. Juno is the little sister of Hudson and Humphrey, both who are former residents of the zoo’s award-winning Journey to Churchill exhibit.

Born at the Toronto Zoo on November 11, 2015, Juno was the only surviving cub in a litter of two and was closely monitored and cared for by Toronto Zoo staff during the early stages of her life. The move to the Assiniboine Park Zoo marks the next step in Juno’s life where she will have the opportunity to socialize and engage with other polar bear cubs close to her age and further her development towards becoming an adult bear.

Now that Juno has arrived at the Assiniboine Park Zoo, she will undergo a standard 30-day quarantine period. An announcement will be made when she is ready to explore her outdoor enclosure and meet the public."

Red pandas, Sachi and Tango, have welcomed twins, a boy and a girl, earlier this month. While they aren't going to be on display for awhile there are baby elk, reindeer and pronghorns to enjoy.

Sad news, polar bear Eli, has died suddenly. He became very sick very quickly and while trying to figure out what was wrong under anesthetic he died. Given the initial results of the necropsy they are not concerned for the other bears. While heartbreaking for staff and the community from a conservation stand point it could have been worse. Eli has a twin brother York who can carry on his genetics. It's not really a genetics loss. The zoo only has one other set of siblings, Blizzard and Star, but due to the fact they cannot breed with the same bears it's a better scenario then brothers who would have the same pool of mates.
