I love the old French names of these Cougars...On March 28th, the zoo announced that their (1.1) cougars Pontchartrain and Maurepas passed away at age 16 due to severe kidney disease/failure.

More cheerful news : the arrival of an Okapi called MIRAQ from Memphis Zoo.
Audubon Nature Institute on Instagram: "There’s a handsome new addition to Audubon Species Survival Center. Say hello to Miraq! Miraq came to us from @MemphisZoo on a breeding recommendation from the Okpai Species Survival Plan. He and our female okapis, Minazi and Asili, are important for the survival of the species. Fingers crossed for an okapi calf in the future!"
Since it hasn't been mentioned here yet, it has been confirmed that he is now at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in California. The zoo’s 1.0 eastern bongo has been relocated on a breeding recommendation.
I suppose the zoo has conciously decided that the Freeport-McMoran Audubon SSC will be the mainstay of their bongo breeding program. Viz also immediately above the okapi. All the okapi are not at the Audubon Zoo but the SSC.The zoo’s 1.0 eastern bongo has been relocated on a breeding recommendation.
I mean, that is what the FMASSC was established to be — a private breeding center built to accommodate large herds of ungulates in large enclosures, so it really isn’t that surprising. The Zoo has consistently only housed bachelor groups — giraffe, bongo, gazelles, wildebeest, etc. The only breeding group of ungulates the Zoo has held in recent years were the barasingha, which breeding of has halted due to Louisiana’s now stricter CWD regulations (the roles were reversed here, where the FMASSC held the bachelor group), Baird’s tapir, and babirusa.I suppose the zoo has conciously decided that the Freeport-McMoran Audubon SSC will be the mainstay of their bongo breeding program. The okapi was previous mentioned on the designated thread for the FMASSC, which was linked by @Smaggledagle. The bongo was actually at the Audubon Zoo, thus why it was mentioned in this thread.IBTW: Would it be sensible to move both up to the thread Freeport-McMoran Audubon?
My apologies if my post didn’t read correctly — the blurb about CWD referred only to the barasingha and why the Zoo has stopped breeding them. As usual, only deer are affected by the state’s CWD restrictions. As such, the tapirs and babirusas are now the only breeding ungulates at the Zoo (although the tapir now also live at the FMASSC while their exhibit is under construction). What is this with Louisiana's stricter CWD regulations for tapir and suids?
And finally how is Okie the gorilla doing? I miss seeing him in Boston. He’s not had any kids yet right?
He sired a baby born on September 4, 2020, but unfortunately the baby died at 6 days old:
