Australasian Cheetah Population

From Taronga’s TV show – 0.1 Liberty (originally imported from South Africa by Australia Zoo, then moved to Wild Cat Conservation Centre, now at Dubbo) has had a few pseudo pregnancies and miscarriage at Dubbo. They are focussing efforts as their main breeding female with 1.0 Innis who was recently transferred from Monarto.
This must mean Monarto has a new male as I was informed they have five males at the moment which I assumed to have been Innes plus his four sons.

Cheetah passed away

Sydney Zoo have announced via socials that Akiki the Cheetah has passed away. Preliminary findings from Sydney Zoo's veterinary team indicate a progressive neurological disorder. Further laboratory testing is currently underway to confirm the underlying cause for his deterioration. My thoughts are with the Sydney Zoo team at this difficult time

Monarto currently have sixteen cheetah - so it appears two have passed and/or been transferred.

Information via email.

Wonder which ones are still at Monarto then if is 5.11 (16) in December

Thanks @WhistlingKite24 @Zoofan15 @Tigergal @Jambo @Abbey @19985
for the news updates and WhistlingKite' for the permission to have a try at keeping the population list here going.

Thanks for putting this together @steveroberts. Yeah I emailed Monarto about it at the end of last year. Four of the males were Innes's sons, and Dakari who was imported from WCC. That would mean two of Monarto's females were either transferred out, or passed away.

Innes was transferred to Dubbo last year.

Thanks Jambo.

If 3.0 Kebeni, Sefu & Timka have all passed away (will email Dubbo) and two of the females at Monarto are no longer there, if their absence is because they have passed away then at the moment there are about 71 cheetahs (36.34.1) in the region currently perhaps (36 males and 35 females).

(in short)
**Hunter Valley no more cheetah, 1.0 Jabari is gone
**Mogo has 0.1 Imani still but 0.1 Ayana is gone
**0.1 Hani has left Monarto to live at Taronga Western Plain (Dubbo) - their (Monarto's) website confirms

(long winded):

Australia Zoo, Halls Gap Zoo, Hamilton Zoo, National Zoo and Tasmania Zoo have all confirmed through really nice email replies, that the cheetahs at their zoos on the list above are their current cheetahs. So has WCCC (mentioning their sponsor a cat page is always up to date, which is great to know for future references).

Hunter Valley replied mentioning they no longer have 1.0 Jabari (or any cheetahs); and only 0.1 Imani remains solo now at Mogo; so am following up asking if if 0.1 Ayana & 1.0 Jabari moved to other zoos and/or passed away.

Monarto confirmed too they have 16 (5.11) cheetahs currently and is same as when @Jambo found out the information in December, thanks man. Website mentions 0.1 Hani has been moved to Dubbo/TWPZ. Friendly helpful staff replied and confirmed they are the cheetahs below and confirmed Dakari's month and year of birth:

Appreciate the further updates @steveroberts
**0.1 Hani has left Monarto to live at Taronga Western Plain (Dubbo) - their (Monarto's) website confirms
Presumbly she's gone up there to breed. Her father also made the move up last year, but it's likely Hani will be paired with either of the two US born males.
Dakari's littermate (a female named Edie) was actually selected for release in South Africa. Due to Dakari's genetic value, he was selected to instead remain within the region and participate in the regional breeding program - fingers crossed we see cubs from him soon.
Hunter Valley replied mentioning they no longer have 1.0 Jabari (or any cheetahs); and only 0.1 Imani remains solo now at Mogo; so am following up asking if if 0.1 Ayana & 1.0 Jabari moved to other zoos and/or passed away.
The last mention I can find of Jabari online is from June of last year. He only arrived back from Mogo early last year (from what I assume was an attempted pairing for breeding with Imani). Ayana hasn't been at Mogo for the last few years at least. Considering it seems she hasn't popped up anywhere else in the time since, I'm hoping she didn't pass as she was quite young.

Adayzay hasn’t turned up elsewhere, so she’s likely passed away. Kidney disease is rife in Cheetah, with Orana losing many females around this age.

Symbio’s website only lists Zola and has for some time.

Oh right, thanks hey. Didn't see their website.

Sydney Zoo currently have 3 cheetahs, am waiting for reply as to their names and if 1.0 Obi is one of the three.

Interesting. So they’ve either received two males (with Obi remaining on site); or received three males and Obi has died/transferred out.

Bachelor facilities typically receive young pairs/groups of bonded male Cheetah, so had they not been confirmed to still be at Monarto Safari Park, I would have said their three youngest males (Moyo, Mwindaji and Balozi) were the obvious candidates.

Considering the National Zoo’s young males are similarly accounted for; another possibility is the two males at the WCCC have transferred over - though they appear to still have breeding application.

An overseas import is of course not out of the question either.

1.0 Mwindaji (Innis x Kuishi) 05-04-2023 at Monarto Safari Park

Turns out 3 of the younger males have gone from Monarto to Sydney Zoo (and 1.0 Obi is no longer at Sydney Zoo). So:

Sydney Zoo, NSW, Australia
1.0 Moyo (Innis x Quailee) 12-03-2023 at Monarto Safari Park
1.0 Balozi (Innis x Kuishi) 05-04-2023 at Monarto Safari Park
1.0 Mwindaji (Innis x Kuishi) 05-04-2023 at Monarto Safari Park

0.1 Zawadi (Innis x Kuishi) 05-04-2023 at Monarto Safari Park

This means Monarto overcounted their cheetahs in reply the other day (when referred to their website) so between December and now those 3 males left.

Really nice staff at Sydney Zoo confirmed Obi is still alive but at a different zoo/w.p of which they personally did not have details of. ''Obi was transferred to another wildlife facility recently, I am not privy to which one unfortunately. Obi was with them (Moyo, Mwindaji & Balozi) for a little while, separately, until the transfer was arranged. The youngsters are doing very well settling in, as I hope Obi is too at his new home.''
