27/5/2025: There are 66 cheetahs accounted for in Australasia - 34.32

I'm very sorry to hear this news, Steve, about the loss of Valiant. I have fond memories of seeing him and the girls in April.

Sad news indeed considering he was an unrepresented founder (unless Leela managed to conceive prior to his death).

Sadly kidney/renal disease is very prevalent in Cheetah and his six years is by no means an atypical lifespan for this species.

Thanks Steve, really sorry too to hear about Valiant.

It sucks Steve.

We had such high hopes for him. He was a standout animal.

Yeah imagine he was a really cool fella. Am sorry for him that he had the bad luck of underlining health issue that cut his life short. It's one of, if not The toughest parts of life, how health issues take so many away from us in what should still be their prime years of life.

If each individual list is hopefully still alive currently then:
there are 68 (33.35) known cheetahs in Australasia currently in 16 facilities.
57 (26.31) who are in Australia at thirteen facilities & 11 (7.4) who are in New Zealand at three facilities.

Update on Cheetah cub:

The female cub born 22/02/2025 had been named ‘Rozi’ (Swahili for ‘Rose’) and has been paired with a puppy for social interaction as is common for singleton handraised cubs of this species (including the cub’s mother, Siri, when she was born 2015).

Thanks so much @Zoofan15 for the news about Rozi. The
keeper who emailed recently mentioned her keepers had nicknamed her ''Shadowfax'' and sometimes ''Foxy'' but now she has a fitting name (hey zoos, you do know there are like 1,500+ {possibly up to or more than 3,000} other languages in Africa could find names from also lol; albeit cool that Swahili gets a lot of recognition through the many names used) but it's a really nice name though. That's sweet about Ziggy her puppy companion friend, given her being handraised situation and need for companionship (interesting that her mum Siri had a puppy companion friend too).

Reminded me of this short segment by Talk to the Animals in 1994 about 1.0 Arusha the cheetah (Oct 1980-May 1995) at San Diego Zoo and his near lifetime friendship with 0.1 Anna the golden retriever he was raised with. (There is the animal training element to their story though that's mixed feelings with, although was over 30 years ago and not all ex-situ living training is immediately bad, some forms of it depending on species help with care or even make it possible for full health checkups close maintenance etc am sure; and Arusha seems to of been rejected as a cub; he arrived at SDZ Jan '81).

You’re right. Swahili does seem to be the go to language zoos use when naming African animals; followed by Zulu names. I know many people on here have been critical of using Swahili to name gorillas and chimpanzees as the geographical link is weak.

The article implied that Siri’s socialisation with a puppy provided her with the skills to interact/breed with male Cheetah once she reached adulthood. It neglected to acknowledge that she was paired with another handraised Cheetah cub when they were adolescents. I’d argue this was more crucial to her social development; while the canine she grew up with was primarily for companionship and play. Peer raising seems to be effective with regards to social development across most felids including tigers and lions.

If this cover photo is not of 0.1 Marah with either Tsavo, and Mikumi and or Kibo , then would be a photo taken from the wild or game reserve or possibly cheetah sanctuary in Africa.

You’re correct that they were the first litter of Cheetah cubs born in Australasia that survived to adulthood. Wellington Zoo had three non-surviving litters in the 1970’s; and Taronga Western Plains Zoo had two non-surviving litters prior to this.

I believe the photo is of Marah with Tsavo and Mikumi as it was noted Kibo was handraised in this article:

https://ia802905.us.archive.org/16/...4-081-083/australian-zoologist-24-081-083.pdf

Kibo was later reintroduced to his brothers and sent to Orana Wildlife Park with Mikumi, where between them they sired 19 cubs between 1993-1997.

1.0 Kibo
Born 11 June 1987 at Taronga Western Plains Zoo
Sent to Orana Wildlife Park 29 October 1988
Died at Orana Wildlife Park 19 February 1999

1.0 Mikumi
Born 11 June 1987 at Taronga Western Plains Zoo
Sent to Orana Wildlife Park 29 October 1988
Died at Orana Wildlife Park 12 November 1998

An update on Edie from Instagram:

We just returned from spending a few days with Edie at @mziki_safari_lodge, and it makes us so proud to see her living as a wild cheetah back in Africa! She is doing so well - living a wild life!

Stay tuned for more videos and photos this week, including a big surprise Edie had for us before we left!

I’m so glad to see that Australia’s first re-wilded cheetah is going so well. I’m placing my bets on Edie being pregnant as the big surprise!

That's such fantastic news, and great to know that Edie is doing so well, thanks for sharing.

0.1 Rozi (Innis x Siri) 22-02-2025 at Taronga Western Plains Zoo

Rozi the Cheetah cub has died:

From socials:

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is devastated by the loss of Cheetah cub Rozi, after a short period of illness.

Born prematurely via caesarean section on 22 February 2025, Rozi spent the first two months of her life receiving around-the-clock, intensive care at the Taronga Wildlife Hospital, Dubbo.

As a result of her premature birth, she exhibited some delays in her development, but she defied the odds to meet all her milestones in her own time. She was growing into a healthy, confident young Cheetah with a promising future.

Rozi’s health recently took a turn, and after extensive medical investigations involving human and animal health professionals it was discovered she had an extremely rare, terminal condition that couldn’t be cured or treated. This condition would have been present since birth but had not presented itself until she started showing symptoms in August. The compassionate decision was made to humanely euthanise her, and she passed peacefully and with dignity, surrounded by the team of keepers and veterinary staff who had devoted themselves to her care for the past six months.

That's really sad to hear, they made the only choice they could for her as hard as it is. Thanks for sharing though. Rest in peace Rozi.

Werribee Open Range Zoo no longer have Cheetah:

Werribee Open Range Zoo are without Cheetah, following the death of their female Kulinda:

From socials:

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to Werribee Open Range Zoo’s beloved 13-year-old geriatric cheetah, Kulinda.

After years of world-class care to keep her comfortable and happy in her golden years, our vets and keepers made the incredibly sad but humane decision to euthanise her this morning.

Kulinda was experiencing various age-related health issues that vets and keepers were actively treating. However, her condition declined in recent days, led by her age-related loss of vision, arthritis and occasional weakness in her hind limbs, which greatly impacted her quality of life.

Thanks for sharing the news. Rest in peace Kulinda.
