Australasian Population List Index

Thank you. It was important to me that @Swanson02’s idea was followed up on (even if it did take a while to get back to him with this).

Cheers mate a lot for doing this, I just think it is a good way for people new to Zoochat or the Australasian zoo scene in general to get a quick understanding of which species here are currently on the brink and what plans/if any there are for them.

I really like the 10-individual threshold too, it is a good size bracket for a "danger zone" you could say.

Updating Population Lists

Following a discussion in the North American forums, the Australasian population thread authors have had a discussion on how we want to maintain our population threads going forward.

This is what we’ve decided:

A new population list will be posted by the population thread author in January if they feel there’s been sufficient updates that year to warrant one. Alternatively, they may elect to post one throughout the year as a result of significant changes to the population (though this is unlikely).

Births, deaths and transfers will be posted in the population thread by the author of that thread.

Discussion is welcome, but posters are asked to keep the discussion relevant to the thread.

It would be interesting to see an African Painted Dog and a Capybara one.

None of the population thread authors are working on either of these species, so feel free to give it a go.

As a starting point, I’d suggest finding out what you can through online research; and then email each holder to fill in any blanks.

These are the regional holders for those two species:

African wild dog: Hamilton Zoo, Orana Wildlife, Altina Wildlife Park, Monarto Safari Park, National Zoo and Aquarium, Perth Zoo, Sydney Zoo, Tasmania Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo, Taronga Western Plains Zoo and Wildlife HQ.

Capybara: Brooklands Zoo, Wellington Zoo, Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Adelaide Zoo, Altina Wildlife Park, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, D'Aguilar Wildlife Park, Darling Downs Zoo, Gorge Wildlife Park, Hunter Valley, Sydney Zoo, Taronga Zoo, Tasmania Zoo, Wildlife HQ and Wings Wildlife Park.

I'm not too sure, I'm still new to this site and I'm a bit worried I won't be able to make it as fancy as the other ones.

Don’t feel discouraged. Some population lists have been easy to do due to having online studbooks; while others have taken months of research. There’s no need to rush it, though I’d urge new population thread authors to undertake only one at a time to avoid putting multiple species on hold that never get completed.

How about choosing a species and beginning a research thread? Tell us what you know versus what you need to know, and people can respond with info they have. Whatever’s missing, email the zoo.

Yeah I might do it at some stage. I also might do the Manned Wolf.

Maned wolf is being worked on by one of the existing population thread authors sorry.

These are the species that are taken:

Hamadryas baboon: @Zoofan15
Pinnipeds: @Zoofan15
Maned wolf: @akasha
Fennec fox: @akasha
Przewalski’s horse: @akasha
Small cats: @WhistlingKite24
Platypus: @WhistlingKite24
Plains zebra: @Jambo

Feel free to choose either African wild dog or Capybara, but I’ll ask that prospective population thread authors don’t lock out more than one species at a time, as if they don’t end up doing it, they’ve blocked others from doing it during that period.

Oh whoops I didn't see that it was already being worked on. Those will all be interesting to read. Isn't there already a Platypus one tho?

No problem. It’s easy to miss things when you’re new to ZooChat.

No, there’s not currently a Platypus population thread, but once @WhistlingKite24 has published it, he’ll post the link on this thread as we’ve done with all the others.

You can read further rules on how we manage our population threads on Post #44 (the fourth post down) of this page.
I found a Platypus captive population thread on the main board, but it's an old one so things might have changed now.

Just keep in mind when doing these threads that some of them may be very difficult, eg capybara, because even if you do manage to get all the information they are often an animal that moves around under the radar and new individuals are not always posted to social media, meaning within a year or 2 much of the information will be out of date.

Also keep in mind a lot of zoos don’t give all this info to regular punters just because somebody has asked. Their staff are pretty busy most of the time so be mindful of that when asking lots of questions via email, can be pretty time consuming to find all the D.O.B and place of birth etc for all these animal just we can post a list in here.

Not trying to be a negative Nancy just saying that you might need to a bit selective about which species you’re wanting a population list on and to be understanding if you don’t get the answers you’re wanting to hear. :)

Notice to All Members

After discussion between the Australasian population thread authors, we’ve agreed to revoke the request that only the population thread authors post news - including births, deaths, transfers.

In line with the North American threads, population lists will continue to be posted annually by the thread author, but news can (and should) be posted by everyone.

In doing so, we apologise for any offence caused.

Will hopefully get up the Zebra population list in the new year. It’s pretty much complete (bar Monarto) but we’ll just have to live with that.

I’ll then potentially look next into either African Wild Dogs or Short Clawed Otters (is anyone doing them atm?).

Don’t worry if you can’t find 100% of the information. You can always add things in/update and post a revised population list (which we typically do each January).

I’ve been doing some research on otters, but nobody is working on African wild dog to my knowledge.

Population Updates - January 2023:

Full list updates for red pandas, gibbons [Javan, White-cheeked and Siamang] and rhinos [Southern White, South-central Black and Indian] have just been posted in their respective threads.

Population updates for giraffe, tree-kangaroo [Goodfellow's and Lumholtz's] and cheetah will be done in January 2024 as they are newer threads than the first three above.

Smaller regional populations like bongos, bears and colobines won't require a full update for some time unless there are dramatic changes.
