Australian Asian Elephant Population 2025

I would say do whatever it takes to get a calf/s from Putra Mas he is to valuable not to just try and rely on him doing a natural breeding it would pay off in the future

At least we’ll have a conclusive answer pretty soon on whether natural breeding from Putra Mas is a go. He’ll be paired with Pak Boon, a proven breeder, so it’s not like there’s uncertainty around whether she’d stand for a bull. Additionally, her window to conceive is rapidly closing. If no calf eventuates within the next two years, it’s almost certain no pregnancy will occur beyond that.

While the plan is for Luk Chai to sire a second cohort of calves at Werribee, this could be adapted for Putra Mas to sire the next cohort of calves via AI in a year or two; with Luk Chai to then sire the cohort beyond that. There’s value in him remaining on site as a mentor for Roi-Yim and other young bulls coming through, so it’s not like there’s a rush to finish breeding with him and transfer him out for a new bull to come in. Werribee had the space to manage two adult bulls, so his presence on site needn’t impede bringing in an additional bull to breed from Aiyara and Kati a decade from now - though tying in with my staggering the births theory, he could impregnate Num-Oi and Mali; and then transfer out as their births approach, with the new bull siring calves to his daughters.

Nine news reported on Putra Mas’s progress last night. he’s doing well and will hopefully make the treck very soon :):)

That is very welcome news, a few more months away until he moves hopefully they can finish much more of the work at Monarto before he arrives!

Good to know he's slotted seemlessly back into his training after exiting musth last month.

The video states he'll transfer across to Monarto sometime this Spring.

Everything we’ve heard of late regarding Putra Mas’ progress sounds very promising. Credit to the Perth team for their tireless work in training him, which will hopefully pay off on the day.

They’ll likely be keen to get him on site before summer, but any additional time from now will no doubt be welcomed by Monarto, who still need to work on his barn.

Hopefully his favourite keeper will travel with him on the day and stay a while for him to settle in there!

what a handsome guy!
With only one living calf from him to date, two if one counts the first calf that passed, both females!

It’s not often we say this with regards to an elephant calf, but a son from Putra Mas would be a welcome addition to the breeding programme given his genetic value. Pak Boon (the region’s most genetically valuable viable cow) would be the ideal mate, combining with Putra Mas to produce a male line unrelated to every cow in the region bar its mother and half-sister (Kanlaya).

If breeding with Pak Boon is unsuccessful, using Putra Mas for AI with Num-Oi at Werribee could be a good move. She’s trained for AI and one of the most genetically valuable cows in the region with only one surviving calf.

Just put him in the barn with the cows! Until Pak Boon is pregnant. So much exposure is important with the time ticking.

I saw somewhere that is the plan. Apparently, none of the other keepers can approach him even.

Steve Edmunds is his favourite keeper. He will be accompanying Putra Mas to Monarto Safari Park (two female keepers have already gone with Permai) and staying on site to help him settle in.

This could potentially become a long term arrangement as it has for Auckland’s keepers. I guess that’s down to Steve himself!

It is a personal decision too. He may have family to consider.

They’ve presumably been tracking Pak Boon’s ovulation cycle at Taronga for a while now; and even accounting for potential disruption to this following her transfer, should have a good idea when she’s cycling. This will enable them to introduce the pair when she’s most receptive.

Holding him with the cows long term could be potentially stressful for them (and unnecessary if Pak Boon isn’t cycling).

I believe that serval keepers have travelled there with their elephants and decided to stay with them

I was taken off exhibit at Perth in 1999/2000 to get a better look at him by the elephant manager he said when I was just about to take some photos not to get to close to the fence as he throws things!

Gung and Luk Chai have this habit too. I visited Melbourne Zoo when Luk Chai was in moda musth (adolescent musth cycle) and he threw a small log.

Dubbo keep Gung in their back paddock when he’s in musth as he has a habit of throwing a projectiles he can get his trunk on.
