Australian Elephants and the Program.

And they certainly won't let the elephnats have access to the enclosure that has the chital in it - there's a sign there stating that the two Morton Bay Figs in that exhibit were planted there when the zoo opened in 1916, and the shelter is an original mockrock structure.

Just to get a little back on track, If Tarongas elephant breeding program keeps going well which I hope it will, I wonder if they will expand the exhibit somewhat for the expected growth in numbers?

Inspired by another thread about wat you would d if you were running an Australian Zoo. If I was running the show I'd move Arna and Gigi to Taronga, Build New facilities in the savannah for Yum Yum and Cuddles or move them to another facility (So they are nowhere near the current exhibit) and move Taronga's Asian's to live in Dubbo's African exhibit (after quarantine and thorough cleaning).

That leaves Burma at Dubbo (with fence contact with other elephants. Gives the new elephants a massive enclosure and there is still one spare display enclosure for Luk Chai when he matures or Gung for breeding purposes.

Dubbo is actually perfect for breeding elephants with facilities that were built to hold African Bulls. But I could not see this happening with the millions Taronga has spent, they would want to keep the young elephants.

Plus there are limited options with the Africans.

ive already said it before, but just connect the existing cow barn via a series of MZ TOTE fences/gates to the parcel of land opposite cats of asia currently occupied by fennec foxes, p hippo, dhole, meerkat etc and create a new area for the female herd.
do away with the service road (use the one above the FFBS theatre/whilst keeping the cats of Asia/snow leopard holding area accessible to vehicles) and create a winding forest trail past the snow leopard and tahr, giving the elephants all the space currently used by the old 'dog row' enclosures. where the new guinea birds are now, send the paddock out across the road and up the hill a bit where red pandas currently are.
giving the animals more space, would not adversely impact on visitor or service circulation.

I guess it will not be to long before Taronga's second elephant calf is born, maybe mid march, it will be interesting to see what sex the new baby is but I hope it's a girl this time. It would be cool to watch the babies playing together.

Your quite right mark. Though being A.I this has a low chance of being female but we can always hope! :)
Does anyone know if Tang Mo has been taken to visit Gung for mating?
-answers much appreciated.

I haven't been to Melbourne zoo for yonks - the last time I was there they only had Bong Su and Mek Kapah, and in their old accommodation.

So, Melbourne people, how is Bong Su accommodated now? Is he kept separate to the cows, close by/adjoining, or is he in the same enclosure during visiting hours? (All day? Sometimes? Never?)

(Thanks.)

melbourne have three separate enclosures that are all interlinked via gates. off one comes the bull barn (which also has separate off-display outdoor stall) and off another comes the much larger cow barn. the third exhibit features the main pool.

all elephants rotate exhibits throughout the day. sometimes the cows are all together, sometimes they are split dookoon/mek kapah/mali in one paddock and kulab/num oi in the other. bong su is usually kept separate except during breeding attempts.

he can smell and hear the other elephants at all times and often see them too. however he doesn't pay much attention to them. still he does enjoy living in exactly the same facilities and all the enclosures feature the ability to manage an elephant via protective contact or not. it is this reason why melbourne's slightly less glamorous appearing exhibit is actually so far superior to tarongas.

its flexible. there essentially isn't really a "bull enclosure" and a "cow enclosure" - all the elephants share the same on-exhibit space. just not always at the same time. if a cow became dangerous. she could be accommodated in the same exhibit under a protective contact regime.

just out of curiosity does anyone know when Bong Su's musth period is around?

Perry Bros. circus is currently around a 35 mins drive away from my house at the moment. I saw Saigon today she seems to be in a very poor state.

unfortunately no, I doubt my parents will drive me up in that direction anytime soon. But I shall see.

You have to remember, Siagon is an older animal, I could go to Australia zoo and say that (Bullen's) Bimbo is in a poor state, because she is! shes an old elephant!

happy easter everyone. i have two questions. Who is the sire of the next elephant due at Taronga? are any of the cows at Taronga planned to go down to gung soon? He has been alone for a while now.

Perry Bros. circus is currently around a 35 mins drive away from my house at the moment. I saw Saigon today she seems to be in a very poor state.

I haven't seen her in the flesh for a little while but when I saw her on "A Current Affair" a few weeks ago she looked to be in very good condition.

If Master nerd has accurately judged her to now be in "poor" condition [and it's a big "if"] then I guess she must have been stressed by the unwelcome and unnecessary hassling by the AR mob.

Saigon is in very good health. Melbourne Zoo staff have visited and given her the all clear. Saigon has potentially 20 more years in her. The Perry's last elephant Minyak was apparently 75 - considerably older than any other elephants in zoos or circuses that have died in recently. The bond Perry has with Saigon is impressive and her situation is currently what is best for her. She is not a social elephant (even though the majority of her life has been spent with other elephants). She is a people oriented animal, she did not even gireve like the others in her "herd" as the rest passed away before her.

Animals Australia is constantly suggesting TWPZ as an alternative and this is clear evidence of their lack of research. I have even erad a claim that they have contacted the zoo to confirm a home for her. TOTAL LIE! I am not for elephants being in circuses I am for elephants being where is best suited for that individual. Dubbo has no more room for elephants as the five cows at the zoo take up all three exhibits.
