Adleaide's male from Rockhampton was previously at Alma Park and the female they had was an old one originally from Perth (had died before the male moved to Adelaide).
The imported Melbourne baboons came from Dierenpark Emmen in 1998. I'm not sure on an exact number but there were between 15 and 20.
would anyone be able to tell me anything about the siamang pairs at Melbourne and WPZ? Melbourne's are called Isidor (male) and Sampit (female); WPZ's are called Puteri (male) and Saudara (female). I'd like to know where and when they came to those zoos if possible.
A few bits-and-pieces questions if anyone can help out with these....
1) back to the Onagers at WPZ, does anyone have copies of Taronga's Zoo Nooz? Apparently the family tree of the Onagers was in one of the 2008 issues online but they are no longer available online. If anyone has paper copies (or has the online issues saved) and can look that up that would be appreciated greatly.
2) does anyone know what year the National Zoo got their pumas? (They were a male and female bred at Melbourne in 1997. Just the female survives today).
3) does anyone know what year Adelaide last had their polar bears? (The pair was sent to Taman Safari Bogor in Indonesia, which opened in 1986, so probably close to that date).
4) does anyone know what year Melbourne last had polar bears?
5) does anyone know where the ocelot at Crocodylus was bred? (She was born in 1994, so I'm suspecting either Melbourne or Adelaide).
....and anything else in this thread which hasn't been answered yet.

Taronga zoo & Western plains zoo annual report for 1983 has the following;
"Notable births include a female onager from the old original Rotterdam mare which prior to veterinary treatment had been considered incapable of conceiving."

From the June 2008 issue:
"World wide there are 23 institutions that hold Persian Onagers, but only on eof these is in the Southern Hemisphere - at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The total number of captive individuals in these institutions is only 139, and nine of them (or 6.5% of the total) live in Australia. ... The animals at Taronga Western Plains were first exhibited in 1979 with the arrival of two stallions and two mares, and the only new blood that has been introduced since that time was an additional one stallion and three mares in 1982. At present, the Australian group consists of one stallion, five mares, two geldings and the beautiful colt, Touran."
I've found a couple of things:
Hamadryas baboons - Melbourne Zoo imported 17 (3.14.0) from Emmen early in 1998.
Siamangs - Isodor (m) arrived at Melbourne Zoo from Germany in 1991. Sampit (f) came from Dubbo in 2001.
Polar bears - I can't find any information on the date of the last polar bears at Melbourne Zoo, but it was probably in the early 1980's, prior to construction of the Syrian Bear exhibit.

Syrian bear enclosure at Melbourne Zoo was originally designed with the Polars in mind - I remember seeing a model of the 'new' exhibit while the original bear pits still existed. It was possible that the original plan was to have two enclosures for Polars and Syrians, but that would be stretching the brain. Not sure why the Polars never ended up in a new exhibit.

thanks very much. The earliest date I could find for the pumas was an article from 2005 but that was as far as I could get.
Which explains why, when I saw it, I was surprised at the large water area, unusual for a 'Brown' Bear enclosure, even if it was doubling as a moat.

The article mentions a new polar bear exhibit is planned for the future, so presumably the polar bear/bears (?) still existed in the zoo at that time. Another website I came across said the old bear cages were taken off-show in 1980 and the new bear exhibit (for the Syrian bears) opened in 1986. The AZA has interest in Persian Onagers...they are a PMP in the US. Its the Eastern Kiang and the Kulan that arent held in US zoos, as far as I know.
From data that I have found...I know of 1.3 Onagers that were imported into Australia (Dubbo)
*1.0 unnamed? born in Tilburg, arrived 1979 in Dubbo from Rotterdam
*0.3 all born in Front Royal, VA, USA. Arrived 1981 in Dubbo from Toronto
I dont know anything concerning the current makeup of Dubbo's herd.

African lion (such a mixed bag I won't be able to collate anything useful)

I still haven't found any info on the origin of WPZ's Siamang pair either (Puteri and Saudara), but otherwise I've got most of what I need for everything else.

According to the book 'Life is a Zoo', Puteri and Saudara both came from Adelaide Zoo.

time for another question or two, this time about African Hunting Dogs.
1) Does anyone know where Perth's female Hunting Dogs came from in 2010? (Possibly in July, definitely before November at any rate). Perth's previous breeders had come from Monarto in 2005.
2) Does anyone know where Western Plains' males Notch and Browny came from, and when. They were the males for female Zuri, who imported from Hamilton (NZ) in 2008. And further to that I read on Zoochat some time ago (2011) that the breeding animals at WPZ are now dead so they are now non-breeding holders - is that correct, or does anyone know the actual situation there (e.g. new breeders)?
