Adleaide's male from Rockhampton was previously at Alma Park and the female they had was an old one originally from Perth (had died before the male moved to Adelaide). So what was the answer to the Baboon questions? Don't keep us in suspense - I would be interested to know!
1) back to the Onagers at WPZ, does anyone have copies of Taronga's Zoo Nooz? Apparently the family tree of the Onagers was in one of the 2008 issues online but they are no longer available online. If anyone has paper copies (or has the online issues saved) and can look that up that would be appreciated greatly.

brilliant, that is exactly what I wanted! On page one of this thread I posted the three versions I had heard, as follows:From the June 2008 issue:
"World wide there are 23 institutions that hold Persian Onagers, but only on eof these is in the Southern Hemisphere - at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The total number of captive individuals in these institutions is only 139, and nine of them (or 6.5% of the total) live in Australia. ... The animals at Taronga Western Plains were first exhibited in 1979 with the arrival of two stallions and two mares, and the only new blood that has been introduced since that time was an additional one stallion and three mares in 1982. At present, the Australian group consists of one stallion, five mares, two geldings and the beautiful colt, Touran."

All three are from Zoochat forums because I could find not a single item about their origin anywhere else. If anyone can clear this up that would be great!
Version one: two pairs imported in 1979 and a further trio (one male, two females) in 1982
Version two: one pair imported in 1979 from Rotterdam and one pair in 1981 from the National Zoo (USA)
Version three: one male imported in 1979 from Rotterdam and three females in 1981 from Toronto Zoo (but bred at Front Royal, USA)
thanks for all of these also. I wasn't totally sure on the number of baboons (I had been told 17 but not completely confidently).I've found a couple of things:
Hamadryas baboons - Melbourne Zoo imported 17 (3.14.0) from Emmen early in 1998.
Siamangs - Isodor (m) arrived at Melbourne Zoo from Germany in 1991. Sampit (f) came from Dubbo in 2001.
Polar bears - I can't find any information on the date of the last polar bears at Melbourne Zoo, but it was probably in the early 1980's, prior to construction of the Syrian Bear exhibit.
thanks very much. The earliest date I could find for the pumas was an article from 2005 but that was as far as I could get.Pumas arrived in 2001 at NZA from Melbourne Zoo.
Syrian bear enclosure at Melbourne Zoo was originally designed with the Polars in mind - I remember seeing a model of the 'new' exhibit while the original bear pits still existed. It was possible that the original plan was to have two enclosures for Polars and Syrians, but that would be stretching the brain. Not sure why the Polars never ended up in a new exhibit.

I found a newspaper article online which says the new brown bear exhibit opened in March 1986 (and cost $50,000). The article mentions a new polar bear exhibit is planned for the future, so presumably the polar bear/bears (?) still existed in the zoo at that time. Another website I came across said the old bear cages were taken off-show in 1980 and the new bear exhibit (for the Syrian bears) opened in 1986. So I take it that the bears were not on exhibit between 1980 and 1986, and then only the Syrians went on display. Perhaps the polar bears simply remained off-show until they died?tetrapod said:Syrian bear enclosure at Melbourne Zoo was originally designed with the Polars in mind - I remember seeing a model of the 'new' exhibit while the original bear pits still existed. yep, that was option three in what I posted earlier:The AZA has interest in Persian Onagers...they are a PMP in the US. Its the Eastern Kiang and the Kulan that arent held in US zoos, as far as I know.
From data that I have found...I know of 1.3 Onagers that were imported into Australia (Dubbo)
*1.0 unnamed? born in Tilburg, arrived 1979 in Dubbo from Rotterdam
*0.3 all born in Front Royal, VA, USA. Arrived 1981 in Dubbo from Toronto
I dont know anything concerning the current makeup of Dubbo's herd.

I still haven't found any info on the origin of WPZ's Siamang pair either (Puteri and Saudara), but otherwise I've got most of what I need for everything else.
ah, brilliant. Thanks very much for that.According to the book 'Life is a Zoo', Puteri and Saudara both came from Adelaide Zoo.
