Chester Zoo Baby giraffe after margaret

Molly was born on 13 November 2006 to Thorn and Kelly. Thorn is 7 and Kelly is 8.

ISIS shows 1.0 pure Rothschild's at Chester, so either the zoo are not listing them to subspecies level, or they have re-identified the females as hybrids. I so hope the former is correct.

Perhaps someone can ask a keeper when they next visit.

Margaret is a pure Rothschild, the first to be born at Chester, to Faye and Thorn. The second giraffe Niamh who sadly died was the 2nd pure Rothschild born to Thorn and Kelly so all 3 adults must be purebreds.

This is not correct, Chester have had question marks placed over there Giraffe's and therefore are now consider as Hybrids with only Thorn & Aofie consider pue sub-species.

I would like to point out at the point of annoucing those births they did not know about this, it has only come to light sometime last year.

You are correct but some of us have known about this problem for quite a bit long than this,as this started out as a problem in Angolan Giraffes which resulted in all Giraffes ben checked.

I just rememberd, I started a thread about the Rothschild's Giraffes at Chester in December.

Aofie was said to be pure bred, but no female is currently listed on ISIS at Chester. I hope she has not died.

Aofie hasn't died.

I was there today and there was definately 6 giraffes and her sign was still up in the Giraffe house (saw no keeper to speak to about the subspecies though)

do the giraffes have an off show area apart from the house as there was definetly only 5 giraffe on saturday both me and my girlfriend counted them

Where did you view them from? There is a branch hanger on the opposite side of the paddock (which is sort of out-of-view from the regular viewing area)

How can Aoife be pure Rothschild's if the Belfast group is now considered not to be pure ?

At one time they must have one pure male and one pure female. I think Thorn is also Belfast stock, but I'm not certain.

ISIS shows Chester holding 1.1 Rothschild's again, obviously a mistake last week.

It must be very difficult working out which are pure and impure Rothschild Giraffe in these groups where there is uncertainty about the purity. unlike e.g. Zebras the distinguishing features can't be very clear and records can be confused.

Mr ZooGiraffe- can you enlighten us generally on this situation with the UK groups?

At the moment i`m in the dark as much as the rest of you i`m hoping to find out a bit more in early may while on a little tour of German and Dutch Zoos.As far as I know Chester have a pure Pair the rest are hybrids, other pure Baringos are Paigntons,Belfasts new group,Longleats,Woburn although i have my doubts about 1 female here, some of Marwells and a couple of males at South Lakes,Dudleys may be pure but not sure as they have had some from West Mids which are now considered not to be pure.

Giraffe distribution is not my strong point!!

I've never quite understood how the various 'pure' races work in a species which is so well distributed and, as you say, there must be 'grading' in various areas.

Can they be DNA tested for purity- or is it all done relying on records and sources?
At the moment it been done by records but i think DNA testing will have to be used at some point, considering that in the wild there is an over lap of ranges betweeen Baringo and Retics but i`m not sure of any confirmed crossbreeding in the wild between the 2 species though.
